{"id":13437,"date":"2023-06-29T13:40:57","date_gmt":"2023-06-29T13:40:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/?p=13437"},"modified":"2023-06-29T13:42:00","modified_gmt":"2023-06-29T13:42:00","slug":"lgbtqia-tutors-share-their-experience-and-advice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/parents\/lgbtqia-tutors-share-their-experience-and-advice\/","title":{"rendered":"3 LGBTQIA+ tutors share their experiences and advice for parents"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>June is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stonewall.org.uk\/our-work\/campaigns\/uk-take-pride\">Pride<\/a> month \u2013 a month dedicated to uplifting LGBTQIA+ voices \u2013 but we think it\u2019s important to reflect everyone\u2019s voice and experience all year through.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, we spoke to three LGBTQIA+ MyTutor tutors and asked them about their experience growing up \u2013 from their school experience to the advice they\u2019d give to parents of LGBTQIA+ children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How did your parents or guardians support you when you shared your sexuality?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I told my parents about my first girlfriend they were interested to find out more about her. They remembered her favourite foods and small details like that, which made me feel like they accepted her being with me.\u201d \u2013&nbsp;a Maths and Physics tutor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey reaffirmed that they love me and will always love me. They also asked what I needed or if there was anything I wanted them to change, and they asked where they could find out more.\u201d \u2013&nbsp;Nicole, a Science and English tutor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What did you wish your parents\/guardians\/school\/friends did differently to support you?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey don&#8217;t know I&#8217;m non-binary and some of my friends make comments supporting transphobia in the media \u2013&nbsp;like \u2018it\u2019s just freedom of speech,\u2019 \u2013 which makes me uncomfortable. It makes me not want to come out.\u201d \u2013&nbsp;a Maths and Physics tutor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What was your experience at school like?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have a lot of trauma from always being on the outside at school. I was bullied by my peers and disliked by pastoral staff for being different.\u201d \u2013&nbsp;a Maths and Physics tutor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What advice would you give to parents with LGBTQIA+ children?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou don&#8217;t need to understand or relate to the way they identify. You just need to support them.\u201d \u2013&nbsp;a Maths and Physics tutor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no need to do anything \u2013 just help their build their confidence,\u201d \u2013&nbsp;Andrew, a Maths tutor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLove them.
