And there\u2019s nothing like that sinking feeling when things don\u2019t turn out as you\u2019d hoped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your teen has had their confidence knocked, it\u2019s helpful to remind them that there\u2019s always a plan b (and c, d, e and f!) and that you\u2019re there for them to help them overcome all the challenges that life might throw their way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are 15 steps you can take to support your teen when results day doesn\u2019t go to plan.\u00a0Plus, our tutors share their own experiences and learnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Reassure them<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Remind them that no matter what results they got, you\u2019re proud of them for the work they put in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, it might feel like their world has been turned upside down, but exam results are just one thing out of lots of other types of achievements. They don\u2019t need to pin their whole self-worth on grades.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese things happen. Not getting the results you want doesn\u2019t take away from you as a person or your hard work,\u201d says Eleanor, an English, History and Psychology tutor at MyTutor. \u201cIt can feel really scary not to have the results you wanted, but you won\u2019t feel like this forever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Speak with teachers and ask for support<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen results day doesn\u2019t go to plan, talk with their teachers and college admissions team,\u2019 suggests Tahidur, a Maths and Science tutor at MyTutor. \u201cDon&#8217;t try and solve and handle everything on your own. There are people there to help you out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Work it out together<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your teen might want some space, they might just want to hang out with friends, or they might want to vent to you. Try to give them whatever they need after results day, but remind them that you\u2019re there to help them work out the next step \u2013 whenever they need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Check if they can get any papers re-marked&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your teen gets results that were way off their predicted grades, or if they missed a higher grade by just a couple of marks,&nbsp;you can send their paper to be re-marked. The best thing to do is talk to their teacher who can help them make the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Consider resits<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If their heart is set on a particular university course or if they need particular grades for their chosen career path, it might be worth considering resitting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GCSE resits take place in November, and A-Level resits happen next summer (along with all the other A-Level exams).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Either way, talk to them about their options and chat with their subject teacher for their advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. Think about working with a tutor<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether they\u2019ve just done their GCSEs and are looking ahead to A-Levels or they\u2019re considering doing resits, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/view-tutors\/\">MyTutor tutor can help<\/a>. Focus on strengths<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile one subject might not have gone as planned, help them to remember their strengths in other areas,\u201d says Alice. \u201cCelebrate their successes and help your teen think about how they can leverage those strengths when choosing A-Levels or taking the next step.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10. Help them pause and reflect<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithout piling on the pressure, help them think about why they didn&#8217;t get the results they wanted. Allow them to take a moment to reflect on all the options available to them and which one they want most \u2013 not just what people want for them,\u201d says Rose a Physics, Maths and Chemistry tutor at MyTutor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou could also help your teen look at other colleges or sixth forms to see if they have any last-minute places if they didn&#8217;t get the grades for their first choice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>11. Remember the bigger picture<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGSCEs aren&#8217;t going to be important to them in years to come, focus on what they want their next steps to be and how they\u2019re going to get there,\u201d says Emily, a Physics and Maths tutor at MyTutor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are also loads of other things they can do besides A-Levels, that put you in really good stead for your future,\u201d suggests Alfie, a History, Geography and Politics tutor at MyTutor. \u201cSo keep your eye out for loads of other great options, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/The-MyTutor-Guide-to-Apprenticeships-1.pdf\">apprenticeships<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"680\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/02.20_MYTUTOR_HANDPICKED-TUTORS-1080x680.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12590 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1080px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1080\/680;\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/02.20_MYTUTOR_HANDPICKED-TUTORS-1080x680.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12590\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>If they didn\u2019t get the A-Level results they wanted\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>12. Speak to their university<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t get the grades I was predicted, but it didn\u2019t have a huge impact. Universities can be flexible and it\u2019s always worth ringing and speaking to them if you don\u2019t get in,\u201d says Katie a French and Sociology tutor at MyTutor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>13. Consider <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/parents\/your-guide-to-ucas-clearing-time-for-plan-b\/\"><strong>UCAS<\/strong> <strong>Clearing<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDon&#8217;t panic when results day doesn\u2019t go to plan. Check your scores and see if a remark is a viable option. Check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucas.com\/clearing-launch\">Clearing options<\/a> from different universities and see if there\u2019s a course that still feels right for you,\u201d says Tahidur.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s obviously not ideal, but sometimes the best things are those that are unexpected. Your teen might find a course that fits them better than their original choice or a uni that\u2019s the right one for them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>14. Think about all the options<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf their initial plans don&#8217;t work out, your teen could consider apprenticeships, vocational courses, or gap year opportunities. These paths can provide valuable experiences and skills,\u201d says Alice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lots of people also take a year out after A-Levels. It can be a helpful thing to do to get some perspective and really think about what they want to do and achieve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>15. Have hope<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlthough I wasn&#8217;t able to get into my first choice University I still managed to get into my backup and had a great university experience working with incredible professors and meeting some great people along the way,\u201d says Tahidur.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI managed to get a first in my degree as I used the feeling of disappointment on A-level results day as motivation for something I didn&#8217;t want to feel again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRemember, setbacks are a natural part of life \u2013 even when results day doesn\u2019t go to plan. What matters most is how you respond to them,\u201d says Alice. \u201cKeep an open mind and be willing to adapt your plans to create a positive path forward!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Think your teen might benefit from a tutor?
