{"id":4718,"date":"2017-01-18T14:19:24","date_gmt":"2017-01-18T14:19:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/?p=4718"},"modified":"2021-08-18T11:22:36","modified_gmt":"2021-08-18T11:22:36","slug":"can-learn-countries-top-international-school-league-tables","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/parents\/educational-news\/can-learn-countries-top-international-school-league-tables\/","title":{"rendered":"What we can learn from countries at the top of international school league tables"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every year, the Organization for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/view-tutors\/Economics\/\">Economic<\/a> Co-operation and Development releases its results on the global rankings of students in maths, reading and science, using a system called the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keepeek.com\/Digital-Asset-Management\/oecd\/education\/pisa-2015-results-volume-i_9789264266490-en#.WH4_9_mLSUl\">Program for International Student Assessment, or PISA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Their latest report, which measures around 540,000 fifteen year olds across 72 countries, shows the UK failing to come in the top ten of any of the three categories. Performing consistently well across the board, however, are several Asian countries, notably Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea. European countries such as Switzerland, Ireland, Finland and Estonia also stand out.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4720 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/SKorea.750-520x360.jpg\" alt=\"SKorea.750\" width=\"520\" height=\"360\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 520px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 520\/360;\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4720 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/SKorea.750-520x360.jpg\" alt=\"SKorea.750\" width=\"520\" height=\"360\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>South Korea tops the league tables<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Which begs the question \u2013 what are they doing right and what can we learn from them? Firstly, these countries spend a lot of money on education \u2013 hundreds of billions of dollars, in fact. However, there are also critical social factors which contribute to their rankings. According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mbctimes.com\/english\/20-best-education-systems-world\">MBC Times<\/a>, the East Asian countries topping the list \u2018prize effort above inherited \u2018smartness\u2019, have clear learning outcomes and goalposts, and have a strong culture of accountability and engagement among a broad community of stakeholders\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s decode that:<\/p>\n<p>Regarding effort, these nations expect their children to work \u2013 hard. In South Korea, children often attend schools seven day a week. <a href=\"http:\/\/ideas.ted.com\/what-the-best-education-systems-are-doing-right\/\">TED<\/a> also points to the \u2018grit and hard, hard, hard work\u2019 of Koreans. It is through this hard work that Koreans have achieved 100 percent literacy, which is a remarkable feat, although TED also warns that \u2018students are under enormous, unrelenting pressure to perform.\u2019 Whilst we\u2019re not suggesting going that far, there is a lot to be said about ensuring your children have dedicated homework time after school, away from the television and their phones.<\/p>\n<p>Andreas Schleicher, a special advisor on education policy at OECD, also points out that the Koreans have large class sizes. Whilst parents in the UK may be concerned about their child getting lost in the crowd, in Korea, \u2018the goal is for the teacher to lead the class as a community, and for peer relationships to develop.\u2019 Certainly, we\u2019ve found that this model of peer-to-peer mentoring works well for our students at MyTutor.<\/p>\n<p>Technology also has\u00a0a role to play. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/fairreporters.net\/world\/the-best-education-systems-in-the-world-in-2015\/\">Fair Reporters<\/a>, Japan has managed its number 2 ranking thanks to \u2018a combination of hard work ethic and technology\u2026 no other country deploys technology in education to the extent that Japan does. Kids have access to resources that most other students do not, giving them the ability to get answers to some of the most difficult questions\u2019. Conceptual learning plays a major role, so that students learn to think independently. To promote this in your own children, it could be helpful to ask them what they thought of a recent news item, and have family discussions about politics, culture, or other current affairs. Encourage them to develop their own opinions on events, as well as learning about them in school.
