It can also help them get creative and even revise for their exams. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/parents\/skills-and-jobs-of-the-future\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">future of work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and everything else) will only be more tech-centric. So, learning how to use it in a healthy, balanced way will help set them up for life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you strike a balance when it comes to screen time? We dig into the research around how much screen time is too much and the difference between healthy and unhealthy screen time. We also share our top tips for finding a balance as a family.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>How much screen time is too much?<\/li>\n<li>What&#8217;s the difference between &#8216;good&#8217; and &#8216;bad&#8217; screen time?<\/li>\n<li>Signs your teen may be spending too much time on their screens<\/li>\n<li>7 apps and websites to help teens learn and create<\/li>\n<li>Finding balance with screens as a family<\/li>\n<li>Help them change their screen settings (to minimise distractions)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>How much screen time is too much?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nccdphp\/dnpao\/multimedia\/infographics\/getmoving.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CDC), kids aged 8-18 now spend, on average, a whopping 7.5 hours a day looking at screens for entertainment. This includes TV, tablets and phones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We now know that excessive screen time has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29499467\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negative effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on children and teens, including mental health issues and poor sleep quality. So, it\u2019s natural for parents to start asking, how much screen time is too much?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts say that it\u2019s difficult to pin down. Although <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/kids-screen-time-how-much-is-too-much\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some pediatricians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would recommend generally no more than two hours of screen time each day, a lot of experts highlight the importance of the content being consumed, rather than just the time spent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe content you\u2019re consuming actually matters more than the overall time you spend on your phone,\u201d Yalda T. Uhls, an assistant professor of psychology at UCLA, told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6174510\/how-much-screen-time-is-too-much\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time Magazine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWatching a documentary on your phone, for instance, doesn\u2019t have the same impact as mindlessly scrolling Instagram.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What&#8217;s the difference between &#8216;good&#8217; and &#8216;bad&#8217; screen time?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making the most of tech is a bit like having a healthy diet. \u201cIt\u2019s important to eat healthy foods alongside sweets and dessert. And the same is true of the \u2019empty calories\u2019 that come from spending too much time passively gazing at screens,\u201d says Adam Alter, Social Psychologist and author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Irresistible-Addictive-Technology-Business-Keeping\/dp\/1594206643\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, \u2018unhealthy\u2019 screen time should be balanced with \u2018healthy\u2019 screen time. And keeping the balance is much better than banning tech altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychologists also divide the way we use tech into two categories \u2013 passive and active screen time. Active screen time is when we\u2019re learning, using our minds, doing something creative or video chatting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Passive screen time is when we\u2019re vegging out, watching a film or scrolling absent-mindedly through social media.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Active screen time is the healthy part of the screen time diet, and ideally, it should outweigh our passive screen time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Signs your teen may be spending too much time on their screens<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re the best person to tell if your teen needs more time away from their screen. It\u2019s also important to open up the conversation. How is the content they\u2019re looking at making them feel? What relationship do they feel they have with social media?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some tell-tale signs that they might need a change:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re finding it hard to concentrate on off-screen activities like reading and writing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have a meltdown when separated from their phone<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They avoid spending time in person with friends and family<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They need to check their phone constantly throughout the day<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your teen can ask themselves these questions to find out how they\u2019re using their screens, and how it\u2019s making them feel:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Why did I pick up my phone just now?<\/strong> Was it to do something specific like chat with a friend? Or was it to scroll through Instagram and TikTok out of habit?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>How was I feeling<em> before<\/em> I reached for my screen?<\/strong> Sometimes, we mindlessly scroll when we\u2019re feeling bored, sad, or lonely.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Is there anything else I could be doing right now?<\/strong> If they\u2019re scrolling out of boredom or habit, encourage them to do something active. Like a chat or video chat with a friend or relative, or even better \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/parents\/daily-brisk-walk-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">get outside for a walk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>How do I feel about myself <em>after<\/em> being on my screen?<\/strong> If your teen is sad or moody after scrolling through Instagram and TikTok, they might be comparing themselves with others. \u201cWe live in an age of social comparison, especially with social media,\u201d says Clinical Psychologist, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/parents\/6-top-takeaways-from-hows-school-with-dr-louise-egan\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Louise Egan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But there are also guided walking meditations, sleep stories and specific content for teens to help them improve their mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><a style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\" href=\"https:\/\/the3goodthings.org\/\"><b>7. Three Good Things<\/b><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a simple online gratitude journal that lets you jot down three things each day that have gone well or made you happy. You can look back over your entries to reflect on the positive moments<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Finding balance with screens as a family<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12889-020-09581-w\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that your teen\u2019s screen time can be affected by how much time <em>you<\/em> spend on your phone and looking at screens. So, one of the best ways to strike a healthier balance is to do this together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you all try to cut down on your screen time together \u2013\u00a0think of it as a fun joint challenge \u2013 you can talk about it with each other and cheer each other on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some handy pointers for getting a healthier screen time balance for the whole family:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>No phones at the dinner table<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family meals are an important time for everyone to connect with each other. You can choose any meal that works. Breakfast or dinner tend to be easiest for everyone to get together.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Listen to podcasts or watch films about screen time and mental health<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Egan says it\u2019s a good idea to listen to podcasts and watch documentaries with your teen on how screen addiction affects celebrities and role models. This way, the conversation around \u2018screen time\u2019 doesn\u2019t just revolve around parents nagging them about it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Design a screen time routine together<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of just banning their phones, Dr Egan suggests you can help them put together a weekly routine that includes screens. It might look like this: socialising, studying, being helpful at home \u2013 and then screen time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can work out the details together. The American Academy of Paediatrics has a screen time <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/media\/Pages\/default.aspx#wizard\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calculator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you can use to work out the right balance for your family.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Plan fun activities<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s easy to fall into the same old routine on the sofa. If you plan to go to a museum, or sign them up for activities they enjoy after school \u2013 it\u2019ll be less screen time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Encourage their passions (even if it\u2019s gaming)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If asking your teen to stop gaming feels like an uphill battle, Dr Egan suggests turning their obsession into something positive. An Easter holiday <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">course<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gaming design<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could get them excited about a career path.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>No screens before bed<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entrepreneur <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-switch\/wp\/2018\/01\/19\/smartphones-finally-tackle-addiction-with-a-little-help-from-arianna-huffington\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ariana Huffington<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> swears by \u2018putting her phone to bed\u2019 in the evening and keeping her room phone-free to help her wind down and sleep better.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Help them change their screen settings (to minimise distractions)<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are lots of ways you can help your teen adjust their tech to work best for them. Many phones have a \u2018screen time\u2019 section in their settings. This is where they can track and limit their use of particular apps and the use of their phone overall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apps like Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and Facebook all have \u2018usage\u2019 sections in their settings where your teen can see how much time they spend on them. From there, you can help them set goals to keep a healthy screen time balance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They can even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lifehacker.com\/change-your-screen-to-grayscale-to-combat-phone-addicti-1795821843\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">set their phone display<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to black and white so they won\u2019t be as distracted by push notifications and ads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are apps like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/gb\/app\/focus-time-management\/id975017240\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that help your teen when they\u2019re revising. On Focus, there\u2019s a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/parents\/mytutor-for-students\/5-top-gcse-and-a-level-exam-revision-tips\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pomodoro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> timer built in so that they can make the most of their study time \u2013 without distractions popping up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It might take some trial and error to help your teen find what works best for them. But it\u2019ll be worth it!
