Revision is key if your teen wants to achieve their best when it comes to exam time. Getting ahead and setting realistic goals can make all the difference, too.<\/span><\/p>\n

But getting teens to do their revision? Well, that\u2019s not so clear-cut. Every exam season, parents across the country deploy a bunch of different tactics to try and help their children knuckle down and get it done.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, different teens respond well to different approaches and there\u2019s no one-size-fits-all method. There are lots of different ways you can support their studies \u2013 and some make for more positive family relationships than others.<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve rounded up 6 common revision supervision styles and spoken to Dr Kate Jenkins<\/a>, our psychology consultant, about the implications of each on you and your child\u2019s relationship.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Nagger<\/h2>\n

No matter how many times you remind them to do something, it can still seem to go in one ear and out the other. Whether it\u2019s \u2018don\u2019t forget to pack your P.E. kit\u2019 or \u2018you need to start revising for your Chemistry exam,\u2019 you might feel that your teen zones out quite a lot.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Nagging inevitably produces resistance, especially in adolescents,\u2019 explains Dr Kate. \u2018So while you\u2019re just desperate to see your teen get some work done before bedtime, often the more you ask (frustratingly), the less likely they might be to go and do it.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Try framing the benefits of getting the work done \u2013 and do it once. \u2018By getting this Chemistry revision done, you\u2019ll feel more confident when it comes to doing the exam.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

The Negotiator<\/h2>\n

For kids who are incentivised not by the joy of learning, but by treats, you might find yourself striking deals as if you\u2019re Alan Sugar and they\u2019re a contestant on <\/span>The Apprentice<\/span><\/i>. This can work for a bit, but for teens to really learn the study skills they need in adulthood, they\u2019ll eventually need to learn how to motivate themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018By bribing your teen to do work, it removes the positive reinforcement of just feeling good that you\u2019ve done your best,\u2019 says Dr Kate. So, while offering a tenner for completing their English revision might feel as if the problem\u2019s sorted for now, unfortunately, it\u2019s more of a plaster than a cure.<\/span><\/p>\n

Try to connect doing their revision with emotional value or their aspirations:<\/span><\/p>\n
