    -Mac OSX 10.6.8 or later
-Intel CPU Linux Apple iPad tablet with the groupworld app installed
-Android tablet running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) or later with microphone and LARGE or XLARGE screen and the groupworld app installed
  • Note: Although it is possible to run the lesson space on an iPad Mini. Please be aware that due to the smaller screen size the user experience may be impacted.
  • What are the internet connection requirements?

All users require a minimum of 256kbps of both upload and download bandwidth, but for optimal performance we recommend 1024kbps download speed and 512kbps upload. You can check your bandwidth here.
  • You can use both wireless and wired connection, although we do strongly recommend that you use a wired (Ethernet wired RJ45) connection from your PC to the router. Using wireless may result in less stable connection and experience.
  • Will firewalls stop me using the lesson space?

The new lesson space opens a TCP/IP connection to port 9175 on the server. Most home firewalls (including the built-in Windows firewall) do not block outgoing connections, so you should not normally have any problems.
  • However, if you have a restrictive firewall which blocks outbound connections you may need to open up TCP/IP port 9175 outbound.
  • What browser should I use?

MyTutor recommends that you use the latest version of Firefox to get the best experience on the website.
  • -Firefox: Supported for Windows and Mac OS X.
-Google Chrome: Supported on Windows and Mac OS X.
-Opera: Supported for Windows and Mac OS X.
  • What hardware do I need?

1Ghz Pentium or equivalent (but 2Ghz with dual-core CPU recommended for optimal performance when using desktop sharing), with 512MB RAM (1024MB with Vista).
  • For audio: users must have a sound card and a headset.
  • For video: users must have a webcam with DirectShow drivers (i.e. any webcam released in the last 10 years).

How do I set up the lesson space?

  • What's the lesson space setup wizard?

Use our setup wizard to take you through step-by-step instructions on how to configure your PC / Mac to work with the MyTutor lesson space.
  • What if I go straight into using the lesson space?

When you enter our lesson space for the first time you will be asked to allow access to your audio and video, simply click allow access. If this is your first time in the lesson space on this PC please try to arrive 5/10 minutes early in order to complete this step.

Do I need a headset? Why?

  • Do I need a headset with a microphone?

We strongly recommend that all users of the lesson space should use a headset with an integrated microphone.
  • Why does a headset and microphone help?

Without a headset the sound that comes through your speakers will feed back into the microphone and the user at the other end will get an echo. Not using a headset might also make the quality of your recording of the tutorial worse.
  • What if I can't find a headset with a microphone?

If you are unable to find a headset with a microphone try to find a pair of headphones to stop the sound feeding back to the other user.

How do I play back a tutorial?

  • How do I record a tutorial?

All of the tutorials are normally automatically recorded: you don't need to do a thing.
  • How do I play back a tutorial?

Tutorials can be played back from your tutorials bookings page in your MyTutor account for up to 28 days after the session.
  • Why might a session not be recorded?

Please be aware that you should not rely on being able to replay the recording of the tutorial session. There are certain circumstances when the recording may not work or is of a poor quality.
  • This sometimes occurs where the broadband connection is variable or where you may have to re-enter a tutorial. The tutorial may start recording again from the point where you re-entered the tutorial.

What about using tablets and iPads?

  • Can I use the lesson space on an iPad or tablet?

Yes. You can use the following devices. iPad or iPad 2 running iOS 4.0 or later Android tablet running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) or later with microphone and LARGE or XLARGE screen.

Do I need a graphics tablet?

  • Does a graphics tablet work with the lesson space?

Yes! A graphics tablet can be useful for drawing graphs, diagrams and equations on the shared whiteboard.
  • If I'm a student do I have to have a graphics table?

Students don't have to have a graphics tablet, but we ask all Maths and Science tutors to have one because they make tutorials so much better.
  • What graphics tablet should I get?

Although we do not recommend a specific tablet, our tutors mainly use one of two Huion tablets as they have found they are particularly good value.

The compact Huion H420 tablet can be purchased online from here, here or here.

The larger brother, Huion 580 tablet can be purchased here.

Both tablets support windows and Mac.
