Innovation through technology at Baylis Court School

Baylis Court School in Slough has worked with MyTutor to help their students get excited about learning. Teachers have noticed increased engagement thanks to MyTutor’s tech-based approach, whilst students have reported significant improvements in their understanding of their subject in the lead up to exam season.

What do you think the advantages of MyTutor are compared to other interventions you’ve done?

It’s the fact that it’s online. It helps to increase motivation because they are using technology, and that works with the younger generation. It’s the online dimension of it all that makes the whole experience “cool” for the students, because that’s the way young people love to learn and do things nowadays - it’s a different learning style.

What changes have you noticed in school since your pupils started using MyTutor?

Our teachers have said that they’ve seen improvements in class, and I have personally noticed a difference at parents’ evenings; parents appreciate the school for collaborating with MyTutor and providing free tuition. They like to know that the school is supporting their daughters, and they feel the attention they are getting is special and individualised.

What made you decide to start one to one tuition for the students?

I didn’t have enough staff and school life is busy, so it would have been impractical to have tuition sessions take place at the school. What’s more, to get 1:1 tuition in this area you’d easily have to pay £30-£35 an hour, or even up to £45 an hour. MyTutor is much more cost-effective.

What differences have you seen by starting tuition early in the school year?

It gets them prepared emotionally and it highlights their weakest areas for improvement earlier on rather than leaving it till later.

Zara and Lubna, Year 11 students

How has tuition improved your understanding of your subject?

Zara: When my tutor explained what I was struggling with, I was able to adapt those explanations to the questions I did in class. And with more practice I was able to do it more easily, and I could then move on to different questions that I didn’t understand.

What do you like about 1:1 tuition compared to classroom learning?

Lubna: In big groups the teacher has to spread their focus across all their students, so I found that if I needed help with something and someone else needed help with something else, I wouldn’t always get the help I needed.

All of the tutors are at university, so they’re a bit younger than your teachers. How did you find it working with someone who’s a bit closer to you in age?

Lubna: It was easier because they understand what we’re going through.

How did you find your tutor as a person?

Zara: Mine was really nice. When I was having issues with my laptop and joined the lesson space 5 to 10 minutes late, he would give me 10 minutes extra at the end of the session. And if I didn’t understand get something he’d save the document and send it to me.

Lubna: My tutor was great. We had the same sense of humour, so we got on well and that made it easier to understand things.
