Shruti tells us how tutoring inspires her students

Shruti has been working with MyTutor since 2016 to provide maths, physics, and chemistry tuition for her pupils. We met up with her to find out more about why she loves tutoring and the impact she has on her pupils.

What are you studying and where?

I did my undergraduate and postgraduate masters at the University of Southampton in engineering, and I’m going on to do my PhD in engineering at Imperial.

Why did you sign up to MyTutor?

Initially I signed up to MyTutor because I needed the money as a student. MyTutor really worked because I didn’t have to travel and it was flexible around my degree. Tutoring also links to my belief in quality education, so it’s the perfect job really.

What are your students like when you begin tuition?

At the beginning of the schools programme when students join, they’re generally quite apathetic towards their learning, either because they think they’re not interested, they think they can’t do it, or they haven’t had the one-to-one attention that they need to motivate themselves.

Throughout time their confidence builds, their knowledge builds and they realise they can do it. They get more engaged and they start actually asking questions just because they’re now interested in it which is amazing.

How do you think tutoring benefits students?

I think tutoring benefits students because it means they get that one-to-one support for their specific needs. It can be so difficult with thirty students to target everyone’s needs, but I think the one-to-one time with tutors means their specific questions can get answered so they get interested in the subject and therefore they’re more likely to work harder at it and perform better.

Tell me about a student who stands out in your memory

A student who really sticks in my mind is an A Level maths student I tutored called Nicholas. He had really low confidence in his maths abilities, but by working together we managed to pick up on the little bits of his exam technique or the knowledge which he didn’t quite have. Slowly, through a few weeks of tuition, he gained the confidence to do it.

You could see him getting excited through the sessions about ‘oh yeah, I did this!’ and I think that’s really important. He was even engaging in conversation about university and things he wanted to do in the future.

What do you think are the main challenges which your students face?

I think a lot of the students on the schools programme struggle getting that one-to-one time and that focus which they really benefit from. Teachers have to balance maybe thirty different students’ needs which can be really difficult for them. By giving everyone an individual tutor it means that we can focus specifically on what they need and develop the skills that maybe they have a weakness in and others are quite strong at.
