Running an effective school intervention programme: what’s the secret?

So, what’s the secret to running an effective intervention programme? We asked teachers across the country who are currently running programmes with MyTutor for their most successful and creative ideas. And here they are! 1. Select the right pupils

This might sound like an obvious point, but it’s one of the most important things to consider when setting up a successful MyTutor intervention programme. Take the time to consider your pupils’ individual needs, including subjects, topics, length and intensity of programme, time of day, learning style, and so on. One pupil may benefit from an after-school session, while another may have a greater attention span during the school day. Interestingly, pupils who have benefited most from the programme are often those who are underperforming in class but have high target grades.

2. Encourage teachers to get involved

We know teachers are busy, but getting buy-in across the school will improve the overall impact of the programme, saving you time and money. You could consider sharing details of the programme at a staff meeting, or in a quick email. If multiple teachers use MyTutor across the school, it allows you to collect data in target areas and work together towards a common goal. Don’t forget that you can also set teachers up with their own portals to track weekly reports and attendance, and share resources.

3. Engage parents in the programme

The home/school relationship is always a tough nut to crack. Schools who have managed to build this relationship successfully have suggested running a MyTutor session at parent’s evening, sending out a parent email or text, or sending a letter home to share the huge benefits of the programme.

4. Make pupils feel empowered, not punished

Your pupils may not always be excited by the prospect of additional tuition, so getting them on board is really important to ensure a successful programme. Here are some ideas to work towards changing negative attitudes towards having additional tuition.

  1. Task pupils with making their own online tuition “Passport” with their login details, schedule and target areas for improvement
  2. Similarly, you could task them with writing a “contract” with details of what’s expected from tutor and pupil during the programme, in any format they wish
  3. Reward with certificates and/or foodie treats for good attendance and progress
  4. You could even try a login race!

The main objective of all of these ideas if to make the pupils feel empowered and excited, rather than punished. A positive attitude is infectious, and can transform a room full of 30 pupils into an engaged learning environment, rather than something that feels more like detention.

5. Feedback, feedback, feedback  

During the early weeks of a MyTutor programme, we’d recommend asking the pupils how it’s going and allowing them an opportunity to give constructive feedback about the tuition. For those with low attendance, make sure you ask what the barriers are, and how you can work together to overcome them. Keep the dialogue open, and if you need any further support, get in touch with your account manager.
