About me

As a maths and computer science student I have a passion for both subjects. In particular, I enjoy mathematics as I find the process of following logical steps to their inevitable conclusion both interesting an rewarding. I have spent hours of my life studying for exams in maths and I have picked up a few tips along the way that I'd like to share with people preparing for those exams now.

I have spent hours of my life studying for exams in maths and I have picked up a few tips along the way that I'd like to share with people preparing for those exams now.

I'd love to help you or your child to get to grips with any issues they're having with topics in maths or computing. I have a bank of resources built up to be able to launch straight into topics and have had a few years of experience tutoring at this stage.

While at university I am strongly involved in our canoe club where I have been organising and running sessions for the past year. The act of coaching a sport I find very rewarding and it has helped me to understand that different people require different explanations for the same problem.

For maths, I have always found the best way to remember how to solve a certain type of problem is to solve a large number of them in one sitting and then to return to the problem type repeatedly for several days or weeks to see if you still remember how to solve it.

About my sessions

My sessions are very student led, as I have found they know which areas they need help with and after a few sessions they feel comfortable enough to open up and ask for help on those topics. I always work through a paper with a student as our first session so I can get a feel for their level and how confident they are answering questions, unless the student is just starting that course.

My sessions are very student led, as I have found they know which areas they need help with and after a few sessions they feel comfortable enough to open up and ask for help on those topics. I always work through a paper with a student as our first session so I can get a feel for their level and how confident they are answering questions, unless the student is just starting that course.

My tutorials involve a 3 different sections. We start with some questions on previous topics we have covered to make sure my tutee remembers how to answer questions on them, and to identify if we need to go back to work on them more. Then a revision of the topic for the day. I start by asking the tutee to explain what they do know about the topic, then fill in any gaps in knowledge and work though so example questions. Finally we spend the rest of the session working through exam style questions on the topic. If the student is struggling I provide more guidance but the aim is for the student to always finish at least one question unaided by the end of the session.

The recap at the start of the session would enable me to see how far my tutee has progressed with the subject and to see if there are any weak areas that need covering. If I am regularly having to do a detailed recap of a topic then I would look into changing my teaching style for the topic as at that point it clearly doesn't suit the tutee.
