About me

Hi, I'm Emily, I'm 22 and I graduated in summer 2018 with a high 2.1 in Biomedical Science. I am now studying for a Master’s in Human Anatomy with Education. I love this course as it combines both my fascination with the human body and my love for teaching others. I love human biology and my passion for my subject is something I'm keen to pass on to those I tutor. Biology fascinates me as it's such a tangible science, and we can see and feel it working around us all the time....

I love human biology and my passion for my subject is something I'm keen to pass on to those I tutor. Biology fascinates me as it's such a tangible science, and we can see and feel it working around us all the time. As I have completed my undergraduate degree, I have lots of experience in my field and have a broad knowledge of biology, so I believe I am well equipped to help students develop and expand their understanding. As well as this, my current course involves Education, so I am constantly developing new teaching techniques. Students often find sciences stressful, but I am a calm, patient, and relaxed person, who will help guide students to help them become more confident in their ability. I'm a relatable tutor with various outside interests: I enjoy hiking in the Peak District, I am a committee member for the university Equestrian Club, and also enjoy balancing my studies with the odd night out! Exams are a stressful time for anyone, but I know myself that having a reliable and friendly face to turn to when studying gets tough can make all the difference in both enjoyment of the subject and grades achieved.

About my sessions

First and foremost, my sessions will be based on the individual and what their needs are, and so no two sessions will be the same. If a student already has a good idea of what topics they need to work on and what they need help with, then the sessions will be based around those. However, I have found through GCSEs, A Levels and now my degree that the best way to learn and revise is through practice. Often, students spend hours making notes and reading topics they actually already understood well, and often subconciously avoid topics they find difficult. Therefore, my sessions will make use of past exam questions (as well as practice questions from textbooks, school worksheets etc) to identify which areas need work, and then going through these topics with the tutee to iron out any issues. I find this method is a very time-effective way of learning and revising, as it avoids spending too much time on topics where the student already has good understanding and is answering questions correctly.

In this way, sessions will typically work by going through questions the tutee has answered beforehand, to identify areas they struggle with, and then working through these to rectify the issues and correct their understanding. I also think it is important to help the tutee identify what individual questions are asking the student to do, so sessions may also involve going over past exam mark schemes.

Highly recommended. My son said it was the best explanation he had had on photosynthesis. He is much more confident now in this subject. Excellent.
