About me

My area of expertise is English language and literature, which I have taught up to degree level. However, I have also worked as a teacher professionally - namely, international academies in Tokyo and Hong Kong - and have prepared students for the SAT, SSAT, ISEE, ACT, IGCSE, A-Level, university applications, and interview technique (largely Oxbridge); I have delivered classes in English, Mathematics (up to IGCSE level), Debate, Critical Thinking, Writing, and Philosophy.

I believe that the study of language and literature cultivates skills, such as close critical analysis and a sensitivity to nuances of expression, applicable to all disciplines - this is why I love studying and teaching English primarily; I bring to each lesson all the skills I have developed over my years in academia and my observations from the pedagogical practice I have had to ensure the most productive and enriching teaching time, to boost grades in the short-term and foster a passion for learning in the long-term.

About my sessions

For a one-hour English lesson, for instance, I would prepare a text (or multiple texts for comparison, depending on the student's level) for study, which the student would ideally read and annotate beforehand. For a one-hour English lesson, for instance, I would prepare a text (or multiple texts for comparison, depending on the student's level) for study, which the student would ideally read and annotate beforehand. We would then spend time in the lesson deconstructing the text based on principles of formal analysis - aspects of language, structure, and form that contribute to meaning. I would help the student to build his or her own wider interpretation of the text, and, from there, we would think about how to plan and execute an essay based around the student's observations and analysis. Since I believe it is important to test each skill as it is taught, I would have the student write an introduction to this essay that fits certain criteria, e.g. a clear thesis, a statement of the three main paragraph topics, a quote and corresponding, relevant analysis at the very beginning, etc. I would tailor each lesson to each student's needs, providing both within lessons and for homework short tests to ensure progress is being made and that the student is practising (and, perhaps more importantly, learning to value the importance of such practice, since it is only then that knowledge can stick). I would also try to encourage further reading and independent study to promote original thinking and a thorough theoretical grounding in a certain field: this is the ultimate preparation for university applications and academic success at the highest level.
