About me

As a medic, I'm used to taking exams and I completely understand how daunting exams can seem! I would love to take this opportunity to support students with exam techniques and revision, as well as helping students to learn and understand difficult parts of the syllabus.

I am hugely interested in the workings of the human body and, since starting my degree, I have been fascinated by how different elements of school-level chemistry and biology are required to understand the workings of the body. I am keen to share my love for science and medicine by ensuring that my lessons include a range of real-life examples to explain concepts and illustrate their importance.

I've had a lot of experience working with school students and taking on the role of a mentor or tutor. I was trained by IntoUniversity to provide weekly science tutoring sessions with a 14 year old girl at the IntoUniversity Centre in Oxford, and I have acted as an online mentor to support sixth form students with Oxbridge applications. I am a trained mentor for Universify Summer Courses, where I have provided one-to-one mentoring to help GCSE students with exam preparation and consideration of future careers. My Dad is also a teacher so I often help at his school during my holidays, and I've learnt a lot about teaching techniques through dinner time conversations!

Outside of my studies, I enjoy travelling and doing outdoor activities such as hiking, running and cycling.

About my sessions

I start lessons by asking the student about the specific area that they would like me to cover and if they have any particular questions or areas of concern.

I provide information in an informal presentation-style using the whiteboard, working through examples. I provide information in an informal presentation-style using the whiteboard, working through examples. I aim to make the tutoring informal, so this part of the lesson would still be largely a two-way conversation, with an exchange of questions and answers. Finding real-life applications to the syllabus is the best way of understanding difficult concepts, so I would use innovative real-life examples.

I then ask the student to demonstrate their understanding, either by talking me through the information in their own words, answering a question I had proposed or answering an exam-style question.

I end the session by asking the student to note the key points they have learnt from the lesson, as well as highlighting a further target for themselves to develop. I would also set the student a target, or might point them in the direction of further reading. I would then check up on the student's progress at the beginning of the next lesson.

Overall, I aim to provide personally-tailored lessons that are engaging, interactive and adjusted to the student's wider interests. I also understand the importance of maintaining a sense of challenge to encourage intellectual curiosity, so I would develop more advanced questions/teaching resources.
