Hi! I'm Laura, I'm 20 years old and a third year medical student at the University of Manchester.

Being a med student here is fun because it allows me to study a range of subjects that I find interesting - it incorporates biology, chemistry, a bit of maths, and is relevant and varies all over the world.

I'm hardworking and I believe that if anyone wants something bad enough then they can succeed, hence why I would like to help others to improve and be the best that they can be. I also understand how it can be hard to carry on when things get tough, when you don't understand, or feel that you simply will never be able to 'get it' - everyone experiences this throughout school and especially in exam time. Doing my a-levels I experienced this a lot but being persistent and resilient paid off for me when I received my grades of three As in biology, chemistry and geography and a B in AS maths.

I have younger sisters whom I have helped with their school work throughout the years, and I was also a mentor at school for some students in years below me. I therefore have experience, and know I will be good, at helping other students with things that they don't understand. Having done 10 GCSEs with results of 9A* and an A, and the help I have given other people in these fields since, I have quite relevant knowledge in a broad range of areas.

About my sessions

The aim here is for the student to get the help in the area that they need - I will find out where this is and base the session off of this. Finding out if the student has a preferred method of teaching that works for them is important before planning the session because everybody learns differently, then I can tailor the type of teaching so that it is specific to each student.

The aim here is for the student to get the help in the area that they need - I will find out where this is and base the session off of this. Finding out if the student has a preferred method of teaching that works for them is important before planning the session because everybody learns differently, then I can tailor the type of teaching so that it is specific to each student.

The structure of the sessions will ideally begin with the student telling me what they already know - this helps the student see that they know more than they think which is good for their confidence. I will also ask them at this stage if it is a specific question or a piece of work that they need help with rather than a concept they need explaining.

Next I will explain things to them in lay person terms - it is much easier to understand things if you have a basic idea first, and then build upon this with more complicated information after. I will keep conversing with the student, checking they understand until we are both happy that they do.

I would like to give them some questions - past paper questions or questions that I have prepared myself, to boost their confidence and so they can apply what they have learnt.
