About me

As of 2018 it has been a decade since I first began studying politics at Sixth Form and the field has only become more fascinating since then. In my first year I stayed up all night with my Dad to watch Barack Obama win the US election and I took my A-level exams immediately after the 2010 election.

At the University of East Anglia I flirted with the idea of pursuing a career as a diplomat; focusing intensely on learning languages. During this time I got my first real teaching experience as I set up a society called "World at UEA", designed to offer free language lessons to students; I taught German.

Through good timing, I took my final exams during the 2015 general election and, as an avid poll-watcher, was stunned at the outcome. I attended Unviersity College London for a part-time MA in Legal & Political Theory and worked in old age care to afford the fees.

During these two years of political upheaval, from Brexit to Trump to the 2017 general election, I put together a research proposal on the politics of old age care. This was accepted by UCL and thus I began my PhD in September 2017 in Political Theory.

About my sessions

My philosophy is that intrigue and fascination always come before learning; the best students are those who genuinely want to learn and the best teachers are those who stoke that genuine interest. My philosophy is that intrigue and fascination always come before learning; the best students are those who genuinely want to learn and the best teachers are those who stoke that genuine interest. Both politics and philosophy are particularly suited to this kind of approach as they touch aspects of life that everybody cares about; the role of teaching them is to demonstrate this connection.

My sessions will be highly individualised, based on what the student best responds to. Some students respond best to the human interest stories at the heart of politics and philosophy, some respond best to the beautifully intricate systems in which those stories take place. I will make it my duty to discover what most interests the student in question, as well as what areas they are struggling with and tailor my lessons accordingly.

If I am able to inspire a self-motivating interest in the subject I will judge these lessons a success, if not I will work as hard as I can to do so. Fundamentally I believe the responsibility for learning lies with the teacher, not the student.
