About me

I am a second year student at the University of Nottingham, I'm studying English Literature and I absolutely love it.

I didn't always love it at school, I often found the texts on the syllabus limiting and I was always reading ahead and wanting to explore other pieces of literature, hating how we'd spend weeks and weeks on a single book. At university level however I have discovered an appreciation for examining a single text in detail and how so much information can be squeezed out of a single page of written prose. This is a skill I would love to pass on to younger students, as it is just as invaluable at a GCSE or A level standard as it is for a Bachelor's degree and beyond.

On my course I have the freedom to read as much as I like, getting to choose exactly what areas of literature I want to study, knowing I have the skills to work independently and think outside the box, just like I did when I was at school. Currently I'm expected to read a minimum of three books a week- I won't make my students do that! However I would love to pass on the knowledge that I have about how to approach a new text and pinpoint key literary details to really get a grip on it and be able to understand what it all means, preparing them for possibly studying literature at a higher level in the future.

My aim as a tutor is to make a student's life in the classroom much easier, as well as when it really counts during exam season and in the midst of coursework deadlines. My goal is to develop the knowledge and comprehension of the content taught in lessons, whilst adding my own tricks for revision and faultless essay technique to save pupils hassle and to get the best results possible, because I know exactly what examiners are looking for.

At school we are taught from a young age to use "big" intelligent-sounding words to enhance our essay writing. Many students are encouraged to use a Thesaurus to find alternative words and add descriptive language into sentences to extend them. This makes sentences difficult to read and can completely change their meaning, resulting in the whole point of the sentence being missed and valuable marks being lost. At university level we are told to be as succinct as possible and get directly to the point, as the less you "waffle" in an essay, the more points you can make and therefore the more marks you will receive.

My focus as a Tutor will be to hone in on this skill and help you or your child transform their essays into flawless pieces of academic writing that will be a joy for any examiner to read, at whatever level of study you may be at or whatever writing ability you possess.
