About me

Hi! I'm Matt, an Engineering Mathematics graduate from the University of Bristol. Over the course of my degree, I've expanded my love for use of maths in real-world problems and the opportunities it brings in technology and industry. Since graduating, I have worked as a consultant in a Business Analysis role but have recently left this role to live abroad while working remotely writing exam questions (and solutions) as part of a start-up website with some classmates from university.

For my University submission, maths was the central focus and something I was very eager to pursue. This suited me very well as maths is one of the topics I've found the best routine to study for - repetition until the method sticks!

Focusing on areas I struggled was an easier obstacle to overcome in maths than other subjects, due to a great selection of questions to practice on a single topic.

Aside of my enthusiasm for maths, I am a keen programmer - the focus of my current job. I am very interested in different cultures and my work lifestyle has allowed me to take full advantage of this - I have recently returned to the Uk after a year of living in Japan!

About my sessions

My teaching approach is based around my studying style: focusing on an area of weakness in exam technique and practising through progressively more challenging questions. As part of my current role in creating questions, I have access to exam-board certified learning materials in order for me to write, and solve questions to the best of my abilities. As a result, I can demonstrate to students the mathematical language, problem solving methodologies and models required to produce answers which meet the marking criteria required in examinations.

In order to make the most of a lesson, we will identify the student’s level of understanding in the topic they are struggling with and then see which step in the methodology they are tripping up over. Once this is identified we can run through some similar examples before letting the student attempt the question unassisted. During my studying, this repetition was key to ensuring the information stuck in my head and being able to see the methods used over a series of differing questions helps this identification stick.
