About me

Hello! I'm David, a student in French and Italian at Cambridge University (Robinson College), having taken Spanish at A-level and spending my summer of last year in Madrid, now looking to pass on my experience and enthusiasm in those three languages to help students at any level of study, and preparing for university. Hello! I'm David, a student in French and Italian at Cambridge University (Robinson College), having taken Spanish at A-level and spending my summer of last year in Madrid, now looking to pass on my experience and enthusiasm in those three languages to help students at any level of study, and preparing for university. I know exactly what it's like at every stage of the process - taking 29 GCSE exams was certainly a baptism of fire! I also applied to Cambridge from the state school system - at every stage I was convinced it was beyond me but here I am with a year behind me, so as well as a love for languages I want to pass on optimism and encouragement; everything is possible. I've tackled academics and all the obstacles it's thrown with enthusiasm and a bit of cheek and I bring this attitude to tutoring, giving positive feedback and making the sessions less of a classroom and a more laid-back environment. I am a qualified TEFL teacher, have taken classes at primary and secondary level and taught children while in Madrid. Otherwise, I am a football, 80s music and film fan, and captain of my college lacrosse team! (Don't laugh.)

About my sessions

I think my teaching approach reflects this (almost unhealthy) enthusiasm for languages - I like to be positive and make everything enjoyable and engaging. My passion comes from one thing, my teachers; over the years I've been fortunate to have captivating, funny and, let's face it, human language teachers, and I'm convinced now that any part of language learning can be accessible and exciting, even the nuts and bolts of grammar. My lessons are patient and structured but reciprocal...

My lessons are patient and structured but reciprocal and completely open to input - the experience is highly personalised, I'd hate to waste your time and I encourage feedback - be honest! I will consult you prior to working with you and get to know exactly what you need and especially what you find hardest and work beside the curriculum, targeting your specific needs. The approach that worked for me was always highly visual, especially for the harder aspects of grammar, colours, diagrams and shapes always left an imprint in my mind, so my lessons adopt this format when it comes to explanation, as well as real-world examples, regular short quizzes and the odd mnemonic to really drill it in. Languages open so many doors, I want to make sure everyone has the opportunity to access them.
