About me

Hi! I'm Martha, a final year German and Russian student at Durham University. For me, German is a beautiful but also methodical language, and I know from school the feeling of accomplishment you get when you finally understand the confusing genitive case, or adjective endings. History is a subject so interconnected with the languages I love and has therefore been a constant throughout my study, as well as something I actively research in my own time. Aside from my studies I'm a keen football and rugby fan and love music. And, as disconnected as these interests seem, there are always ways of connecting your own interests to the subject your are learning to improve your knowledge. I also understand the effort it takes to master certain tricky aspects of these subjects, but the reward is great and I hope to help you get to grips with the things you've been struggling with.

I will specifically tailor my lessons to suit your individual needs, focusing on helping you understand (in a way that works for you) the things you have struggled with up to now. I will try to understand how you work best so that lesson preparation and the lesson itself are as beneficial and enjoyable as possible. A good measure of progress will be actual past papers or past paper style questions, specifically on tricky areas, which can be completed before and then talked over during a lesson. Generally I would split my lessons into various sections to both maintain focus and cover different aspects. Starting with a warm-up exercise or going over some questions you have prepared is a good start to the lesson, followed by covering the main points of the lesson, with a recap at the end to remember what has been covered and briefly summarise new aspects that have been learned. I strongly believe that one of the key aspects of studying is enjoyment of the subject, and this is different for each person. In order to encourage learning, introducing students to the subject outside of the classroom for your own time is very beneficial: for German, if you love sports you could find some sport to watch in German online, you might find a film, sport or YouTube you like and for History, documentaries or finding out about something in history related to your own interests. This doesn't have to take hours -even just ten minutes or half an hour in a week is beneficial.
