About me

I have been tutoring friends and family since I was thirteen and I am so excited to help others develop their knowledge of History and English.

In History, I specialise in the late modern era particularly as regards Britain from 1850-1950 with an emphasis on the inter-war years. However, I am also able to cover areas ranging from US History to Imperial Russia to General European. While I am a late modernist, I have a background in early modern and medieval history.

My knowledge of English Literature is wide-ranging and I am able to tutor anything from Chaucer through to the modern day. My particular interests are in Gothic literature and Victorian novels, especially those by female writers. My degree is in English Literature but I have a strong background in language as well. I also have an extensive knowledge of drama, having both studied it and worked on countless theatre productions from a variety of genres.

As well as my degree I have qualifications in French, Spanish, Italian and Latin and I aim to integrate these as well as a little philosophy and art history into my lessons in order to give your children the most well-rounded experience possible. While exams are of prime importance when considering tutoring, I also value a genuine love of the subject and the chance to develop inter-disciplinary skills.

About my sessions

In my opinion, tutoring works best when it is primarily driven the student. I encourage my students to think before our sessions how they would best like to use the time. In order to do this, I ask my students to have at least three points they wish to work on whether it is clarification of a certain argument or structuring an essay.

In order to do this, I ask my students to have at least three points they wish to work on whether it is clarification of a certain argument or structuring an essay.

We will work through these and spend any remaining time on pushing the student on to the next step. I will suggest extra reading, podcasts, radio shows or films that can be used to enhance the student’s knowledge of the subject area. They will then be able to look at these in their own time.

I do not presume to give any indication of a grade a piece of work might theoretically receive. Instead I am able to give extensive comments on pieces of written work, indicating both what is good and areas that could do with improvement.

The best results are achieved when the student enjoys the subject and so expect my sessions to be full of enthusiasm with analogies to break down points and tailored for each individual. Everyone learns differently and I make sure to take this into account.
