About me

Hi! I'm Katie, and I'm available to tutor English up to A-level and History up to GCSE. I've always wanted to teach - my plan is to do a teaching course after graduating from Oxford with a degree in English (I'm in my second year), and then to go on and work in a secondary school or sixth-form. I've had lots of teaching experience prior to tutoring, including a volunteering placement working as a learning assistant in a school for children with learning disabilities - I...

Hi! I'm Katie, and I'm available to tutor English up to A-level and History up to GCSE. I've always wanted to teach - my plan is to do a teaching course after graduating from Oxford with a degree in English (I'm in my second year), and then to go on and work in a secondary school or sixth-form. I've had lots of teaching experience prior to tutoring, including a volunteering placement working as a learning assistant in a school for children with learning disabilities - I'm patient and dedicated, and I know I can cater for a wide range of needs. I live my life by lists and schedules, so I'm pretty well-suited to the organisation required for tutoring. I place so much value on building relationships with students and watching them develop their potential; the student always comes first!

About my sessions

I'm a huge believer in the concept that there is no set formula that works for every student, so I try to tailor sessions to the individual. I'm acutely aware that syllabuses and exam specifications have been changing, so I aim to establish exactly which exams a student is doing in our introductory chat, and ensure I'm well-informed about that exam's requirements before starting the full sessions. This preliminary chat is also a chance to meet each other, and to get a feel for...

This preliminary chat is also a chance to meet each other, and to get a feel for the student's needs, strengths and weaknesses, and preferred learning style. I aim to deliver what the student needs most - I do a lot of preparation for my sessions, whether that be tracking down practice questions, analysing poems ready to discuss with the student, or coming up with spelling lists. My main emphasis is on flexibility; I'm always happy to alter tutorials if a student needs longer to work on a particular topic, or equally to plough on through if they're grasping something more quickly than expected. I want my students to avoid feeling like they're trapped in a rigid learning structure that can't adapt to their individual needs - one of the main benefits of a one-to-one tutor is to allow this personalised flexibility!
