About me

I am currently an English undergraduate at Exeter University, and am due to embark upon a year's study abroad this September at Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, Germany. I am currently an English undergraduate at Exeter University, and am due to embark upon a year's study abroad this September at Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, Germany. As someone who shares an interest in history, the classics, art and drama, I find that interest satisfied by the study of literature and enjoy how multifaceted my degree course is. English is not an isolated field of study, since literature is inevitably informed by the period it emerges from, and often is in reaction to certain events, political and social. As a university student, I am encouraged to centralise what I find interesting when approaching a text and would like to endorse that type of engagement in producing nuanced ideas. Furthermore, I am well-versed in literary criticism and am able to supply that knowledge of critical frameworks when considering the various meanings of a chosen text, and hope to use that awareness to greater inform an understanding of the depth of language. Although not vocational, the study of English at whatever level encourages greater analysis, creativity and cultural awareness and I hope to bring about a perspective wherein the study of English informs, and improves upon, an individual aptitude in the other humanities.

About my sessions

My sessions will be structured around what the individual student finds difficult and I would hope to stimulate a discussion centred around what the student finds interesting. I intend to link up with what is being taught in class so that my lessons are complementary and would structure my lessons around recent feedback that has been received in class. I would structure the sessions in view of the assessment objectives that need to be met in the examinations; I hope to approach each text with...

My sessions will be structured around what the individual student finds difficult and I would hope to stimulate a discussion centred around what the student finds interesting. I intend to link up with what is being taught in class so that my lessons are complementary and would structure my lessons around recent feedback that has been received in class. I would structure the sessions in view of the assessment objectives that need to be met in the examinations; I hope to approach each text with a view to characters and themes and would supplement this with close analysis of select passages in order to exercise that student's linguistic analysis skills. For a candidate applying to Oxbridge, I will encourage that interest in wider research and would use extracts from a wide variety of literature in preparation for the demands of the ELAT. In order to simulate the ideas-driven discussions of the interview, I would use the sessions to create a dialogue wherein the student proposes a thesis about the text and would then analyse the text in-depth to support that argument. I hope to set optional exercises that can be considered before the next session or suggest methods of revising; if the student finds a text challenging, I will also supply prompts and questions that can help stimulate their thought processes. I would, ultimately, measure the student's progress upon their performance in class, as well as their participation in each session.
