About me

I study Biological anthropology as part of archaeology at university. Biological anthropology is the study of humans in a biological perspective, looking at human evolution, behaviour and ecology. Biological anthropology also looks at human ancestors, hominins, and other primates to put our species in context. I love my subject because by studying it I am able to start to understand what makes our species different and human. I also feel like I am able to understand why we behave in certain w...

At school I took exams in both the sciences and humanities all the way to A level, meaning I have a good understanding of the way students are examined in both. I can give advice based on the resources students will have from school, and on the best ways for effective independent study and approaching questions. My experience in applying to university was hard due to the universities I was applying to, and have therefore gained experience in writing effective personal statements and passing oxbridge interviews.

At university I row for my college’s first boat. I have also taken part in theatre and charity work. As for my other hobbies I play the flute, enjoy swimming, surfing and reading.

About my sessions

When preparing for my exams the thing I struggled most with was applying what I had been taught to exam questions, working out the best way to answer and the terminology which was required. Therefore these are the skills I would focus the most on with my tutees.

In tutoring sessions I would ask the student to pick an exam question or topic they are struggling with. This would preferably be before the session. We would then go through the topics covered in the question to ensure they understand it, and then look at the exam question and try to identify what is required and the best way to go about answering it, how to apply their knowledge. However this is only one approach, and if a student works better in another way I would be happy to adapt.

I use this approach as going through exam questions was the best way for me to improve my exam technique. Furthermore it allowed me to work out how much I knew, and what I needed to go over. It helps students work out the depth of knowledge needed to answer each question.

Other learning methods which I think are useful are flash cards, mindmaps and short quizzes. This covers a range of learning methods and ways of learnimg.
