About me

I am a recent graduate in History and French from the University of Oxford. I taught English in France during my year abroad, and have worked on the University of Oxford’s summer school three times, teaching year 12 students how to approach the HAT.

I think both disciplines are great ways to understand and communicate with people, and I have enjoyed studying them immensely. In History nailing the structure to different questions early on is key to success, and this is

what I will initially focus on. Once a solid foundation has been laid, more complex ideas on the nature of sources and historical events can be fitted around this framework, to best answer any questions that come up.

For French I cannot stress enough how much using the language is key to improvement, and this is what made me enjoy studying it so much. What is also important in A Level French is the film or literature essay, and studying this at degree level is what made me love literature even more. As someone who did not study English A level I understand the hurdles of understanding an unfamiliar discipline in an unfamiliar language, but instilling a love of literature in French was key to me applying to study it at university, and key to improvement.

About my sessions

I structure my lessons around lesson objectives which we will discuss at the beginning. If the focus is a specific exam, then I use example questions to structure the learning and measure improvement, the student requiring less assistance as we progress. I prepare questions to look at and my own ways of approaching it as support.

I structure my lessons around lesson objectives which we will discuss at the beginning. If the focus is a specific exam, then I use example questions to structure the learning and measure improvement, the student requiring less assistance as we progress. I prepare questions to look at and my own ways of approaching it as support.

For History drawing out the key concepts and ideas needed to answer a question is the best way to start, which I will leave the student to provide, only making suggestions when they need assistance. Then we will discuss structure to the questions and how best to make an effective argument, depending on the level. What also becomes increasingly important as the exam approaches is timing, and this is something I will encourage students to bear in mind as the exam draws near.

For French the structure of the class depends on the level; if the focus is a grammar concept, we will work through examples with the pupil until they can independently apply the rule. Similar objectives and examples can be used for literature or film. Practicing speaking for as much of the sessions as the student requires is important too, as a warm up or summary exercise at the end of the lesson.

I think a good understanding encourages a love of learning. I would love to instil this curiosity and enthusiasm for the application of both these disciplines in my students.

Very helpful as usual, really good feedback. Pushes me to think in a more detailed way and see the specifics which before I wouldn't have understood.

Annie is preparing me for my HAT test and helping me with my personal statement, she is a great and committed tutor. She is always prepared and has a plan for the lesson. If I do not understand some concepts she tries to explain it from a different perspective, which is very helpful. I am more than satisfied and I would recommend her to anyone who needs someone organised, helpful and kind to help with their subjects, or uni application.

I enjoyed this lesson thoroughly as it was so organised and I could see that Annie had paid so much attention to my essays. This is something I’ve never had before due to being in large classrooms at school so I really appreciated it. In addition to this, Annie’s lesson was so structured and she explained what we would be doing at the start of the lesson which made me feel so at ease and calmed my nerves. Annie is also so friendly and relatable so I felt instantly comfortable when speaking to her which I was previously worried about.
