About me

I'm James - a fifth year medical student at the University of Cambridge. For the first two years of my degree I studied pre-clinical medicine and in my third year I undertook an integrated BA in Biological Anthropology, graduating with first class honours. Last year I began my clinical training to become a doctor. Medicine has always appealed to me as the ideal field of work – perfectly combining my love of applied science and working with people. Medicine is challenging, full of variety and, above all, exciting - I can’t imagine doing anything else. My time at uni hasn’t just involved work, and I’ve been actively involved in the Cambridge theatre scene. I’ve performed on the university stage, as well as taking touring shows to schools in East Asia and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Being a medical student has meant lots of exams, aptitude tests and interviews. The process hasn’t been easy, but my experiences are ones I can apply in helping you prepare for your next academic steps. I have previously tutored GCSE and A-Level content, as well as advising students on entrance exams and university applications. Having been interviewed and accepted by all four of my UCAS choices (Cambridge, University College London, King’s College London and Birmingham), I can provide guidance on interviews at Oxbridge and other universities.

About my sessions

Before beginning to tutor you, I will always make sure we discuss how you are doing currently, and the targets you would like to reach. This will likely involve me reviewing some past pieces of your work, or possibly setting you a short test. From there we can draw up a plan of action. A typical online lesson will begin with a brief recap of previous material. If I have set you work from our last lesson, normally in the form of past paper questions, I’ll ask you to submit it in advance. Small...

Small regular pieces of assessed work will enable me to measure your progress. We can then discuss your answers and re-address concepts you may have struggled with.

My tutoring style has been greatly shaped by my experience of the supervision system at Cambridge. I will plan each of our lessons in-depth and always begin by addressing the core underlying principles of a topic. I find a base of foundational knowledge is best created using simple and interesting real-world examples of applied science. Once we have achieved this, I will challenge you to address more difficult concepts and give you relevant exam questions to review your learning over the course of the session. I believe that by drawing your own conclusions – being guided to the right answers as opposed to simply being given them, important information is then more likely to stick.
