About me

Hi all!

My name is Guy,and I'm a maths and physics student at the University of Warwick. I think the best thing about studying maths, especially at higher levels, is the moment that everything clicks, and suddenly a problem that seemed impossible becomes easy. A lot of mathematicians would agree that the most important skill to do maths is determination. Everyone gets stuck, but when you stick with the problem, you will get there in the end. What I hope to bring out of my students

What I hope to bring out of my students

is the ability to take a step back and try something new - even if it takes a while to solve a problem, the joy you get from reaching the end is worth it!

By now, I've completed four consecutive years of exams since Year 11, and I can say that I've stuck with the same approach throughout, that's worked for me so far! I hope to work with my students to make sure they've covered every part of their exam syllabus carefully - getting used to exam-style questions and being confident in their mathematical abilities. It helped me in the past and I am sure it will help you, too. Doing exams and applying to university can be a stressful experience, but it can be easy to succeed with a good mindset!

Besides studying maths and physics, I am in my university's chess society and I'm a big fan of Star Trek. I like basketball (go Kings!) and I love rock music. Your life doesn't need to revolve around maths to be good at it, but hopefully, you can enjoy it too!

About my sessions

Everyone has their own way of understanding things, and that is especially true when it comes to maths.

Primarily, my goal in lessons would be to give my students the right intuition to solve mathematical problems. Once you see the underlying meaning behind what you learn in school, it makes a lot more sense and everything becomes much easier.

The first lesson would consist of me learning about you, the student. I will ask you to tell me if there are any subjects you...

The first lesson would consist of me learning about you, the student. I will ask you to tell me if there are any subjects you specifically require help with, or any specific requirements you have of me. Then, we will work through a Maths Challenge-type question that should be suitable for your level -Maths Challenge questions primarily challenge your logical reasoning more than your knowledge of the syllabus, but if your logical reasoning is good, then the rest will follow! Maths challenge questions are designed to be difficult but fun - so hopefully you'll enjoy working through one!

As lessons progress, I will go through and try to explain topics that you think you could use some help on - I would very much like you to have some of your own questions ready for every lesson, it'll help me- and more importantly yourself! It's good to think about what subjects you're confident on and what you think you could improve on. Every lesson will end with working through one or more exam style questions. Towards exam season, the lessons would involve mostly exam questions.
