Hi! I'm Aimee, and I'm going into my second year at Durham University as a student of English Literature. Some people like to say that English is easy, but that's not how I've found it! The art of communication, of really delving into and understanding a work of literature, and then formulating an eloquent argument around it, particularly in timed conditions, was an experience that I found daunting throughout GCSEs and A levels, but it can also be really fun. I would hope to help my students enjoy exploring literature as much as I do, encouraging them to think and come up with their own original responses to the texts that are guaranteed to get them the highest marks. However, I would also focus on helping my students to perform as well as possible in their exams, by engaging closely with their exam requirements, advising on essay structure and teaching techniques for writing style and to deal with time pressure. I have experience in marking English papers at AS and A level standard, so I have a good understanding of what makes a successful essay and how to ensure you tick the necessary boxes to get the grades you deserve. In addition to English, I enjoy history, having taken two modules of it in my first year, as well as drama, shown by my participation in five different productions at uni so far, so I would also be happy to tutor any of these subjects.

About my sessions

I aim to structure each of my sessions around what students need help with, be that understanding a text by breaking it down, practicing and planning essays, making character profiles, practicing close language analysis, learning context or criticism, or anything else you may want to cover! I always enjoyed English lessons as they were an opportunity to talk through my ideas with someone, so our sessions will be very interactive, a chance to explore topics or ask questions that you maybe felt...

I aim to structure each of my sessions around what students need help with, be that understanding a text by breaking it down, practicing and planning essays, making character profiles, practicing close language analysis, learning context or criticism, or anything else you may want to cover! I always enjoyed English lessons as they were an opportunity to talk through my ideas with someone, so our sessions will be very interactive, a chance to explore topics or ask questions that you maybe felt you couldn't ask in class. I believe it is important to encourage active learning, so I will analyse texts and plan essays along with you, allowing you to come up with your own ideas which I can then help you refine and develop, keeping sessions challenging and exciting. As someone who always found the time pressure of exams stressful, I would also encourage doing essay plans and analysis in timed conditions, and then going through them together. I would also be happy to help with any UCAS work or interview practice, having gone through the process myself and knowing how seemingly daunting it can be. If I sound like a good match for you, get in touch! I look forward to working with you.
