About me

I'm currently a masters student at the University of Sheffield studying Cancer biology. In the future I'm hoping to go onto study a PhD and further develop my love of science.

During GCSEs I loved biology and my passion for it continued which brings me to where I am now. I am a keen advocate of science communication and engagement and trying to make science more enjoyable for younger years. From this I have learnt how to communicate things clearly and concisely and explain concepts in new and exciting ways-- I'm now even a guest writer for an USA based precision medicine company.

During exams, like every other student I felt the stress, but I found new ways to help me adapt and find something enjoyable in learning whether it be teaching a small group of friends, making concepts more relatable or just working through exam papers.

About my sessions

As I mentioned previously, one of the best ways I've found (particularly in science) is making the concepts more relatable.

Basic areas will be covered initially to ensure the student is fully understanding before moving on to the next steps of the process such as the application of a theory or applying a concept to an exam paper- at this point diagrams are your best friend

I have found it best works by going through a few questions in the exam paper with the student, making sure they can take notes of key things along the way and learning exam technique which can be applied all subjects.

Attainment will be met by the student talking me through how they would approach a question to ensure a complete understanding.

Questions Gemma has answered

why does taking the full course of antibiotics prevent antibiotic resistant bacteria?

The full course ensures the death and removal of the entire population of harmful bacteria whereas an incomplete course enables a small population to survive. This small population becomes resistant to the antibiotic through a process called "Mutations" i.e. The DNA nucleotides sequences e.g. AGCT changes to ACCT. Although the rest may be killed, this single bacterial cell survives and replicates into hundreds or thousands. Treatment is only specific to the first DNA sequence and the antibiotics no longer function. The new bacteria is "Antibiotic-resistant".The full course ensures the death and removal of the entire population of harmful bacteria whereas an incomplete course enables a small population to survive.
