I am passionate about disproving the myth that English is a difficult or boring subject. There are so many students who feel that they cannot do well in this subject because they fear being wrong or are unable to understand the text they have been set (particularly Shakespeare and poetry). However, I want to encourage reading aloud, watching film adaptations and reading modern translations in addition to the primary text as it gives a foundational understanding of the texts which they are studying.

I will help my students improve by having a discussion about what the enjoy, what they struggle with and the way in which they like to learn. By focusing on these three aspects I provide a tailored and personal approach to tutoring, allowing students to improve in both exam performance and overall confidence.

About my sessions

I am a firm believer that every student has different needs. Some may struggle with identifying literary techniques, some may find it difficult to understand why different literary techniques are used and some may have difficulty when structuring essays or even how to best revise for exams.

I am a firm believer that every student has different needs. Some may struggle with identifying literary techniques, some may find it difficult to understand why different literary techniques are used and some may have difficulty when structuring essays or even how to best revise for exams.

Therefore, the way in which I structure my sessions will be tailored to the needs of each individual student. Take for example, examination preparation which requires lots of practice. At the end of a lesson I will set a past paper and ask for it to be completed before the next session. Then we can read over it and time for questions which I will answer. Then I will discuss the good points and the points that can be improved within the essay and repeat the process to ensure continual improvement.

I think that the most important way of assessing the progress of any student is in their confidence as well as the statistical improvement of results. I hope to encourage my students by praising them for small improvements in performance. I also feel that in order to encourage learning it is important to push them to research, read and write outside of our lesson time in order to put them ahead of the competition.
