About me

I am an incoming MSc Geoscience student at UCL, having recently completed my Bachelors of Science in Geography at Durham University. I am an incoming MSc Geoscience student at UCL, having recently completed my Bachelors of Science in Geography at Durham University. My course specialised in physical geography as opposed to human geography, though many crossovers between the two branches existed across the course and my final year research project proved an effective, trans-disciplinary combination of the two. I have a good understanding of the 13+, GCSE and IB course requirements and their differences having sat exams for all programmes. My broad knowledge basis within the field of geography across multiple programmes makes me a dynamic and effective tutor, capable of detailed yet holistic examination of any given problem. Though my academic music studies finished once I left school, I still practise the skills I learned at IB and GCSE level through performing, recording and composing in my free time. I play the piano and bassoon to Grade 8 standard, which complements my theoretical studies. Music technology and recording at IB level were especially valuable skills I learned during this time, which I frequently employed formally at live music events across my university campus. These practical skills augment my ability to teach music in an inspiring way. However, through personal experience I am aware of the challenging nuances that shape the IB and GCSE music courses and I seek to give my students the confidence to tackle these areas head-on.

About my sessions

I believe a good approach to tutoring strikes a balance between a focus on on areas of difficulty and consolidation of prior knowledge. I believe a good approach to tutoring strikes a balance between a focus on on areas of difficulty and consolidation of prior knowledge. I also believe in structuring tutorials with varied activities, where possible, to maintain motivation and concentration. For example, I often use the start of a session to address feedback from the previous session and to identify areas of perceived difficulty. I then split the rest of the session into halves. One half is for approaching difficult topics from different angles (breaking down the content using diagrams and flowcharts) and the other is for reconsolidating the content. For particularly difficult topics, from which some students may shy, I believe it is important to contextualise the content and encourage a holistic approach to their field of study. This is crucial in putting lesson content into a wider perspective and fostering synoptic links between topics, which can often help to overcome sticking points.
