About me

I'm Saskia, and I'm in my final year studying history at Durham University. I also achieved A*s in both my History and Psychology A Levels and GCSEs, so have a good understanding of the requirements for these subjects and exams! I'm passionate about history because I think it opens up so many different ways of viewing and understanding the world; history is an extension of our own experience, and in being so opens and changes our minds in so many ways. I'm a friendly and communicative person and often represent my College at Durham at open days. Helping others with history is all about breaking the questions down and helping them to think in different ways, seeking to open up their own ideas and encourage independence of thought. What will impress examiners is not someone who can recite a textbook but someone who can thoughtfully and originally engage with a question, and encouraging students to be confident and inquisitive is at the heart of that.

About my sessions

Firstly I would read the specification for the tutee's exam or course and ensure I had a proper understanding. I would ask the tutee to identify any specific areas they were struggling with. For me good teaching is all about breaking the problem down and showing plenty of examples, so the tutee has resources they can refer to and gets lots of opportunities to see the difference between their current work and what they are aiming for, so they have clarity on how to improve. If a tutee is preparing for an exam, there is no better way to prepare than to discuss past questions. I will also ask lots of questions of the tutee to try to bring their opinions out and increase their confidence. In history answers do not have to be black-and-white, and in fact the best answers generally aren't, so isn't a case of guiding a student to a "right" answer. Instead it is about guiding a tutee to express themselves in a more nuanced and confident manner. If a tutee was struggling with content, I would try to make the course less overwhelming; history is vast and it is easy to get bogged down. This could involve making timelines or again discussing exam questions to hone down what they need to know so they are not wasting time. Whatever the tutee is struggling with, I would ensure I had researched it thoroughly before the tutorial and considered the best way of breaking it down for them, taking into account the student themselves as well as my own knowledge of teaching methods.

Again a very good session with Saskia, she helped me with identifying factors for an exam, which is something I really struggled with. At the same time as consolidating my content knowledge.
