About me

Hi! My name is Maria, I am 19 years old and have just finished my first year at the University of Exeter studying History and Spanish. I love both subjects equally (although it is hard to choose); the freedom and satisfaction of being able to communicate with native Spanish speakers as well as the analytical skills and the amazing ability to persuade that comes from being a history student!

Helping students improve and seeing their progress and development is a priority for me; I understand that each student is an individual and has personal preference as to how they learn best, so I will cater to this and try and make lessons as informative (and fun) as possible so that students come away from lessons feeling like they have really learned something new and of importance.

Gracias!

About my sessions

My online lessons will be delivered around a particular topic or theme, for example por v para in Spanish, or Nazi economic policies in History. In the lessons, I will aim to provide a broad overview of the topic so that the student is aware of the key facts and figures, and also relate this to real exam questions and examples with advice on how to secure a top mark.

I will prepare for lessons by researching the topic thoroughly as well as brainstorming any questions the student might have. I will not overload the lessons with information and facts, rather working with the student to help test them on what they already might know, and working on adding a few things to improve their understanding.

I will help students achieve their goals first and foremost by being encouraging and willing to answer any questions and address any concerns. I think it is really important to talk students through examples, and encourage them to answer exam questions both in lessons (with my guidance) and outside of lessons. Progress does not always have to be measured by statistics, I believe that quality of answers and confidence in lessons is a clear indicator of student progress!

Questions Maria-Louisa has answered

Analiza las acciones de dos personajes principales en la novela Como Agua Para Chocolate. En tu opinión, ¿qué revelan de su personalidad y actitudes? (Analyse the actions of the two main characters in the book 'Como Agua Para Chocolate'...'

This question is asking you to choose two main characters in the novel, and pick significant actions which demonstrate to the reader their personality and attitudes. The introduction should give some context regarding the book, as well as outlining the 2 main characters chosen for the essay and a brief overview of their personalities. For the main body of the essay, it is important to focus 1 or 2 paragraphs per character, and in these paragraphs it would be useful to follow a PEAL structure (Point, Evidence, Argument, Explain). For example, when discussing the confrontation between Tita and her mother, it could be argued 'la confrontación parece representar un cambio monumental en la personalidad de Tita ya que ella dijo 'ya me cansé de obedecerla'. Por lo tanto, me inclino a creer que es la primera vez que Tita puede reivindicar sus creyentes'. This example includes a quote to back up the point, which is useful but not necessary, and also leaves room for the student to expand upon the point. The conclusion must sum up the main argument concisely.
