About me

Hi, I’m Alysha, I’ve just finished my undergraduate at Oxford studying History. I really enjoyed my time at university and that was fundamentally because I love my subject, and as a tutor my hope is I can encourage students to love their subjects as well.

Hi, I’m Alysha, I’ve just finished my undergraduate at Oxford studying History. I really enjoyed my time at university and that was fundamentally because I love my subject, and as a tutor my hope is I can encourage students to love their subjects as well.

For me, studying History is a bit like piecing together parts of a puzzle to reveal a vivid and colourful picture. Dates and statistics are needed to understand the skeletal framework, but the real excitement lies in diving into the thoughts of individuals and understanding why events unfolded as they did.

For my A-levels, I also studied Latin and English Literature. I thoroughly enjoyed the problem-solving aspect of translating Latin and as well as the creative and analytical side to the literary critique of works such as Virgil’s ‘Aeneid’ and Ovid’s ‘Amores’. Whilst saying this, I also know how tedious Latin grammar can be at times and therefore always look to take a fun approach to memorising vocabulary and grammar structures.

I am very happy to help with any university applications and/or interview preparation. With the History Admissions Test (HAT) and interviews, I find that having practice means that in the real thing, students feel much more comfortable with tackling foreign material.

I am about to start my law conversion course with BPP in Cambridge. I love to do a range of activities outside of studying, from (mainly) reading, to baking to rowing!

About my sessions

One-to-one tutoring is a great opportunity for students to have their say and so the aim for my sessions is to have students speak and discuss their ideas as much as possible. I recognise that every student works differently, so I can tailor sessions to any format which they find works best for them, whether that be talking through specific problems, focusing on exam technique or overviewing whole modules together throughout the school term.

I think it’s important for students to have a space where they can formulate opinions and air their views on a topic rather than necessarily always being told the answers an examiner is looking for, as I think that’s what really instils a love of learning. However, I understand that it is also important for students to be given the right tools to perform well in their exams. As a tutor I make it a point to have a thorough understanding of the marking criteria of the relevant exam board and to spend time in sessions looking at exam questions and planning how the student might go about structuring answers to them.
