Hi!

I am a recent graduate who has been working as a private tutor alongside my MSc Geoscience course which I completed this year. I have helped tutor students in a range of subjects from year 6 maths and English to A Level Chemistry and Geography.

Since school I have always taken time to help friends and peers with school work when they found certain topics difficult. During A Level I would spend 1-2 free periods a week helping friends with chemistry and geography particularly around exams. I really enjoy helping other people to learn because it helps me improve my understanding as well. I am looking forward to continue to this.

I have experience helping with coursework assignments as well as exams (SATs-A Level). At school, I was not naturally talented at exams and over the last few years I have developed different techniques to help me revise better and gradually become good at exams. I think this is one aspect which helps me be an effective tutor. I can understand the position of finding exams difficult and can offer different solutions to try and help exams be less stressful.

About my sessions

Typically, I structure my tutoring sessions around practice questions. This includes either working on problems the student has been given over the last week in between sessions or using practice exam questions. I will work with students to break down the questions to identify the areas which they find more difficult before finding solutions which make sense. It is then important to develop a more generic structure or set of steps to follow when answering similar questions. We will then test...

We will then test the answer structure on similar questions to ensure the student understands the topic.

When tutoring, my aim is to help the student become independent and develop their ability to tackle difficult questions alone. I

always encourage the student to explain their thought process when answering a question and work with them to develop their critical thinking skills so that during exams it is easier to answer the more difficult or unexpected questions.

I try tailor individual sessions to best help the student to learn. For example, if the student is a visual learner I will use colours and diagrams to illustrate answers, whereas if they are more kinetic I will base sessions around answering multiple practice questions. I am a patient, friendly and approachable person and always make sure I create a positive atmosphere when tutoring and encourage the student to ask as many questions as they would like.
