About me

Hi, my name's Rosie and I've just finished my maths degree at the University of Exeter.

I have tutored a couple of students over the course of this year and have tutored several students face-to-face at home over the last few years. I have tutored a couple of students over the course of this year and have tutored several students face-to-face at home over the last few years. For me, maths has always been my favourite subject throughout my entire school career, and this has been primarily due to the string of fantastic teachers that I've had. I like to think that I can pass some of that knowledge on, and help students find enjoyment in maths as I do. I remember first seeing algebra and thinking how on earth am I ever going to be able to get to grips with this? But here I am, years later and I've practically learnt another language and want to be able to impart that on other students.

A little bit about me:

At Exeter, I was an editor of a campus magazine. I find writing gave me a good break from looking at numbers and symbols all day. I spend a lot of my free time at the gym or running, as I find this a really good stress reliever especially when deadlines approached at the end of term.

About my sessions

In my sessions, I would want my tutee to explain to me which topics they are doing well in and which ones they struggle with. Luckily with maths, there are clear, distinct topics which means we can easily break up sessions.

Once we've assessed which parts they are weaker on, I would aim to go through some worked examples with them. With previous tutees, I gave them a few questions on the topic we'd be working on to go through on his own in between sessions. This made it clear to...

Once we've assessed which parts they are weaker on, I would aim to go through some worked examples with them. With previous tutees, I gave them a few questions on the topic we'd be working on to go through on his own in between sessions. This made it clear to me in the following session whether he had really understood the method and therefore could solve the problems alone. If there was something he hadn't understood fully, I would try to explain it in another way and go through a similar example.

In sessions, I use a lot of diagrams to explain concepts as I've found in the past that it is a lot easier to understand something when you can see it in front of you while someone is explaining it. Still now, I usually draw myself a small diagram which helps simplify a much larger problem.

Generally with maths, practise makes perfect. All through school, doing countless exercises was the only way that I cemented the knowledge in my mind. Therefore, in my sessions, I go through lots of examples and ensure that the student can work through them efficiently without making silly, little mistakes. The majority of mistakes I make are so small, 2+2=5 for example, and these are the most annoying but the easiest to rectify.
