About me

Hi, I'm Ellie and I'm a maths student at the University of Bristol. I'm excited to tutor people in maths because I want them to be as enthusiastic as I am - it's a part of all aspects of life and therefore I think it's a very important subject to get to grips with! I attended a state school and actually received a reduced offer from Bristol as a result of this, despite getting the standard grade requirements. In the university application process I found talking to current students and teachers very helpful, to see what universities want from you and to have more of an idea what to expect - I am happy to give advice on this if anyone is anxious about it! As well as this, I have experience of very intense study; after taking 5 A-levels I have experience of time management and how demanding it can be, so I can give students tips on what to prioritise during exam season.

At university, I am a member of the cricket club, as well as having a part time job at a bar and also taking part in intramural netball and socials with the maths society (Matrix). I have always liked keeping busy and so I find that this works for me.

About my sessions

I have tutored for six years, initially working with students who are borderline passing, but now with a range of abilities. I find it very rewarding helping them to understand a topic they may have been struggling with for a long time. In my experience, every tutee is different and need different methods of teaching. Some are visual, so we draw everything out on a board or piece of paper. Others need every step worked through to make sure it's all clear in their heads. And some like real...

And some like real life analogies - they may understand how a percentage works in a sale, but need to understand how to apply that in maths.

Over the years I have helped my tutees by preparing revision questions, summary sheets and cards for them, as well as having quick-fire quizzes which they seem to find useful in the weeks before exams, to commit formulae etc to memory. I also like to assess regularly with end of topic questions to check understanding of a topic; where possible I like to have access to past papers they may also have done in school so that I can see where there are gaps in understanding or where the teachers haven't been able to cover everything fully.
