About me

Hi there! My name is Gabriel and I'm a 21yr old third year student at Durham University, studying French and German. In addition to focusing on grammar and language skills at university, I'm also really interested in Franco-Germanic history.

Hi there! My name is Gabriel and I'm a 21yr old third year student at Durham University, studying French and German. In addition to focusing on grammar and language skills at university, I'm also really interested in Franco-Germanic history.

At the moment I'm on my year abroad in Düsseldorf. In addition to studying over here, I'm working as a journalist for a pro football club. I've also lived in Paris during my gap year (and will move there later this year again), and this enabled me to further my French skills from A Level standard. Both experiences have helped me realise cultural and linguistic nuances in France and Germany, that are often overlooked in schools. I would like to think that my students benefit first hand from my experiences and the subsequent knowledge that I impart, better preparing them for situations outside the classroom.

In 2017, I homeschooled a 12yr old boy for the entirety of the summer term. We worked through all his school topics, creating a detailed school-like timetable, and this experience has since massively helped my tutoring. More recently, I was employed by a family to teach their three children in Spain in the summer of 2019. This intense but rewarding experience has made me even more acutely aware of the ways in which different people learn.

Away from the academic side of things, I'm a keen sportsman (literally, ANY sport!) and love travelling, reading, and of course anything French and German!

About my sessions

Sessions will vary depending on the student and their needs. Ideally, the first one or two sessions will be designed to assess which methods of teaching best suit the student. With the exponential rise in students using digitally-sourced materials to learn, I often harness that, with lessons sometimes including snippets of the newest foreign-language Netflix series for cultural immersion and auditory processing practice!

With the exponential rise in students using digitally-sourced materials to learn, I often harness that, with lessons sometimes including snippets of the newest foreign-language Netflix series for cultural immersion and auditory processing practice!

Occasionally, it's also quite nice to go back to basics with textbook work (!), but I think it's important to split up sessions into 20-30min segments to avoid a monotonous style of teaching.

Learning from an old teacher, I think a good rapport with the student is far more important than a draconian attitude in achieving the ultimate intended goal, so in the first few sessions there will also be an emphasis on getting to know the person I'm assisting, rather than just going straight into bombarding him/her with verb tables!
