About me

If there's one thing you ought to know about me, it's that I love mathematics. From simple word problems to integrating complex functions, mathematics is a powerful (and beautiful) tool in understanding the world we live in.

I believe the key to success in mathematics is a combination of a strong and thorough understanding of the theory underlying a topic, along with plenty of practice applying it to real exam questions. I aim to develop this complete understanding with my students by introducing a topic from first principles, building upon the student's existing knowledge,

I encourage my students to be active thinkers, considering the properties of each problem carefully, before rushing into a solution method that could lead them to doing loads of unnecessary work. I will often present and work through more than one approach to solving a problem: this is an important aspect of teaching mathematics, as it enables students to bring in techniques from a wide range of topics when they are faced with a question that doesn't fit the pattern of standard textbook examples.

About my sessions

Prior to the online lessons, I will contact you to discuss the needs and goals of you/the student and plan so we can spend as much time as possible doing maths. If you are struggling understanding the theory of a topic and how the maths works, I'll recommend we use the lesson to re-introduce the topic and all its intricacies, doing some short practice questions throughout to make sure you're getting it. If you are having trouble applying the theory to exam questions, we could either use the lesson to work through some practice problems together, or you could try some questions beforehand and we'll work through any difficulties you had whilst doing them. After each session, I will send you a summary document of the content covered as well as some additional practice questions to try for no extra charge.

During the sessions, I will encourage the student to always ask questions so that they understand what is going on at every point; for example, instead of simply accepting that the derivative of ln(x) is 1/x when we use it, we would spend a few minutes working through the proof, which provides valuable insight into how the mathematics works, meaning that, when exam time comes around, more is understood and much less needs to be learnt to use parrot-fashion.
