I’m a third year History undergraduate studying at the University of Oxford, with a passion for education. I have been tutoring for the last 4 years and have competently and successfully helped students achieve their best when preparing for their 11+, GCSEs and applying to top Russell Group Universities- including Oxbridge. Having achieved 10A*s at GCSE and A*AA at A Level, I am confident I would be able to bring out the best in my students and have them reach the top grades, as I have fine-tuned the methods to do this. In school I was also Head Girl, Founder and Chairwomen of MUN and an ESU Public Speaking Finalist. Indeed, the time management skills I learnt from these experiences, as well as ability to express myself concisely, clearly and confidently is something I know will aid me when tutoring. At University I was Vice President of the Oxford Union- a job that required me to spend 86 days of my vacation in Oxford inviting speakers, and I interviewed the likes of Martin Scorsese, Paul Giamatti and Stephen Merchant. Indeed, the dedication I gave to the society is something I would emulate in my role as a tutor.

About my sessions

I think what makes an effective tutor is being flexible and being able to cater to the individual’s needs. Therefore, I would firstly chat with my student and see what methods of teaching works best, whether they are a visual learner/ like to have lots of notes, as well as discuss the areas they struggle in at School/ university. I would then divide teaching into both content and exam technique, to ensure they were not only understanding and enjoying the material they were learning, but also...

I think what makes an effective tutor is being flexible and being able to cater to the individual’s needs. Therefore, I would firstly chat with my student and see what methods of teaching works best, whether they are a visual learner/ like to have lots of notes, as well as discuss the areas they struggle in at School/ university. I would then divide teaching into both content and exam technique, to ensure they were not only understanding and enjoying the material they were learning, but also apply to apply the information in an exam setting. For essay subjects, I would start the lesson with an essay question and then flesh out the topic- to ensure they were getting the breath of knowledge needed but also able to fulfil examiner’s expectations. We would begin the lesson brainstorming the essay title, before going through potential points for essays, critical/ historiographical interpretations, periphery knowledge and looking at similar exam questions. I would research the topic/ exam questions thoroughly, looking at examiner reports to see exactly what they were looking for, and creating slides that would cover every 20 minutes of the lesson to ensure we got through everything. As well as going through essay plans and content, I would want to make the lessons interactive- through showing content PowerPoints, videos and drawing mind maps together. I would conduct a fortnightly evaluation session to see what the student is gaining the most from.

Shivani is an incredible tutor! She was kind and encouraging whilst helping me with my History A-Level retake! I have always found exam technique challenging and Shivani has definitely been one of the most helpful teachers I have ever had in this area! She broke down each stage of the exam, telling me exactly what I needed to do. She was careful and judicious in her marking, using a mixture of the mark scheme, examiners’ report and her own academic knowledge to provide clear and detailed feedback at every point. I achieved the grade I hoped for and my first choice of university with her help! I highly recommend her!
