About me

I am in the final year of my English Language and Literature degree at Oxford and on my year out became a qualified ESOL teacher (English for Speakers of Other Languages), having completed 4 months of training. This means I have experience teaching both 1-1 and full classes. Throughout my university years I have enjoyed offering advice to others studying English, aiming to help secondary school and university pupils to access the subject with comfort, skill and, above all, enjoyment. This means I have experience teaching both 1-1 and full classes. Throughout my university years I have enjoyed offering advice to others studying English, aiming to help secondary school and university pupils to access the subject with comfort, skill and, above all, enjoyment. Exams and university applications can be daunting for so many students. However, with one-to-one tutoring and advice, lessons can respond to individual needs and create effective ways of working and revising.

I will tailor my lessons to suit you! I hope to help you understand texts, get to grips with essay writing, and create meaningful analysis. Working through texts together and formulating approaches that you can reproduce on your own has proved successful in my own experience. I especially enjoy creating refreshing and exciting ways to study and revise English, which will hopefully bring some energy to the subject.

About my sessions

The direction of my lessons will depend on the level/ qualification you are working towards and what you hope to get out of tutoring. I will engage with the authors that you are studying and discuss your thoughts and ideas before addressing and developing reading, writing and exam skills.

I hope to provide you with ways of retaining what is being covered, whether drawing out diagrams together, making tables, or organised and effective ways of note-taking. Lessons will involve discussing...

I hope to provide you with ways of retaining what is being covered, whether drawing out diagrams together, making tables, or organised and effective ways of note-taking. Lessons will involve discussing and working together so you can progress towards producing structured and skilled responses to literary or linguistic texts. This way, I hope you will be able to reproduce this level of work in the future and that lessons will be useful for exams as well as class work or coursework.

I'm also very happy to mark written work.

Bethan tutored my son for English Language (with a little literature here and there) from October 2018 to June 2019 when he started his GCSE's. When the tutoring started he lacked confidence and had just got some class results for GCSE practice English Language questions of 0/8 and 1/8. Bethan was accommodating, patient and helped nurture my son through a difficult time. She was able to assess and determine where his challenges were. My son responded to Bethan's clear guidance, explanations and the challenges she set. His confidence started to increase and his grades improve. He has not long had his GCSE results. Grade 8 in English language and 6 in English literature. Well above his predicted grades. We can't thank Bethan enough for her help and support. We can recommend her whole heartedly.
