As someone who struggled at school, I understand how frustrating it is to feel as though you're unable to keep up with the pace of the classroom. For a long time I thought it was because I wasn't clever enough and this was a huge knock to my confidence and my attitude towards education. However, after only a few tutoring sessions, I realised that I was more than capable of understanding what was being taught - I just needed it explained to me in a different way. Sometimes all a student needs to achieve their full potential is someone who teaches them in a way that is tailored to how they learn best. Once I began believing in my educational ability, school became much more enjoyable and I soon realised that not only did I enjoy Geography, but I was also pretty good at it as well. Having that extra support simply to build up my confidence was crucial for my intellectual growth, and is something I try to facilitate for every student that I mentor. Having worked as a Kumon assistant for 6 years and personally tutored students to receive top GCSE grades, I believe my passion for education translates into the way I teach and therefore into my students' attitude towards their studies. I believe this positive attitude is crucial for any student to achieve their maximum potential.

About my sessions

Before each session, I ask the student what has been covered at school, and any aspects they struggled with. This preparation ensures that my lesson plan is as productive and useful as possible.

The session is split into three parts. First I address any work I set in the last session and explain my comments in detail. I devote a lot of time to this as I believe constructive feedback and learning from your mistakes is the most effective way to progress. The second section in...

The session is split into three parts. First I address any work I set in the last session and explain my comments in detail. I devote a lot of time to this as I believe constructive feedback and learning from your mistakes is the most effective way to progress. The second section involves learning new material. I address any knowledge gaps that the student has from their school lessons and ensure they fully understand all topics. I avoid "spoon-feeding" and instead provide the student with information so they are able to answer their own queries themselves. Not only is this a superior way of learning in terms of how well material is understood and remembered, it also builds the student's confidence in their own ability. Finally, active interaction with the material helps solidify new information that has been learnt. This involves tasks such as mindmaps, worksheets or planning answers to exam questions. This part of the session is important as it will cement the student's knowledge and give them confidence that they are comfortable with the material. I try to provide students with a task to complete before our next session as the more a student interacts with material, the more comfortable they become with it, and the better they retain it.
