About me

Hi, I'm Emily, and I'm a First Year Architecture student at the University of Sheffield. I've been working for MyTutor since September 2018, and I have since been working regularly with eight students, four of whom are part of the Schools Programme. I received 11 A*s at GCSE, and in Sixth Form I studied Maths, French, History, Art and EPQ.

I got an A in Maths A Level, with my favourite topics being mechanics, statistics, trigonometry and algebra. I worked as a Maths and English Tutor for Explore Learning for 18 months, and I also worked as a private maths tutor for three students during 2018. I therefore have a lot of knowledge of different teaching methods to use, so by getting to know my students' needs and how they learn, I'm sure I will really help them to improve!

I also love French, receiving an A* at A Level, during which time I also took part in a French Exchange. This helped me to become more confident and authentic, and also because of studying French literature and film as part of my A Level, I have a very thorough understanding of the language and will therefore be able to give a greater insight into complex language and comprehension during my Online Lessons. As an A Level student I volunteered as a French mentor at my school, which allowed me to work closely with two GCSE students, and I assisted the Languages Department with French club, so once a week I worked with both individuals and small groups of students.

About my sessions

I will start by asking my students to colour code a list of their GCSE topics, to show me which topics they are confident with, which they have some understanding of, and which they find challenging. I can therefore prioritise the content to cover, and this also provides a clear sense of improvement, because as my students improve, this list can be updated.

I will start by asking my students to colour code a list of their GCSE topics, to show me which topics they are confident with, which they have some understanding of, and which they find challenging. I can therefore prioritise the content to cover, and this also provides a clear sense of improvement, because as my students improve, this list can be updated.

I will therefore ask in advance which specific topic my students would like to focus on in their next Online Lesson, as this will best ensure that they truly consolidate their learning. For maths, I will then prepare a series of questions to be worked through, ranging from more basic questions to past exam questions. I will also be happy to help with any homework that my students may be struggling with!

For French, I will prepare tasks specifically for both the content and skill which my students would like to work on, for example by writing a paragraph which I can dictate so that the student can practise listening, writing and grammar, or by writing phrases which need to be completed by conjugating verbs in a chosen tense.

For both subjects, I will also work through past papers with my students, and mark these with them. I can also use a feedback method which I learnt at Explore Learning, which involves praising what the students have succeeded in, noting key examples which they have worked on, and providing advice as to how they could progress even further.
