About me

Hello all! My name is Ana Rousseva, and I am a first year Chemical Engineering student at the University of Edinburgh. I am an enthusiast of chemistry, mathematics, systems engineering, and complex organisms (us!) Aside from my deep fascination of the scientific field, I am a avid reader who deeply enjoys analysing novels and composing analytical essays on thematic topics. I enjoy taking on an interdisciplinary approach with my interests, as so many forms of critical thinking can be applied to a variety of topics — I believe this makes learning not only more productive, but also more enjoyable. As for my personal interests, I have always displayed a propensity towards helping others maximise their potential and reach their desired goals, from coaching swimming to volunteering at schools and organising study sessions in maths and science. I highly enjoy getting to know the unique qualities of each individual; subsequently, I tailor a study method to the student itself instead of forcing a study method on a student. I have had experience in multiple schools across various locations (Honolulu, HI; Bucharest, Romania; Arlington, Virginia) thus I believe I have gained a more comprehensive insight into the world of teaching. I would like to not only help you improve in a subject academically, but to also expand your view and learn how to tackle any challenge that comes your way!

About my sessions

I believe that each session must vary depending on the learning style of each student. I like to start off at a baseline in order understand your current level. In order to ascertain a deep understanding of the subject (and exam structure,) I find it important that a student answers questions to the best of their abilities using their research methods, and then discusses any gaps in knowledge with me. Depending on your current experience, I would enjoy sharing my knowledge of research, note-taking, mnemonics, and overall study structure in order to maximise the amount of information that you can process. I believe that, in order to test your understanding of a specific topic, it is important to be able to teach the content in your own words. In certain domains, you will find yourself having to memorise a plethora of facts that may seem formidable. Yet, if you manage to relate the facts to your current knowledge and apply it to a larger picture, you will find yourself memorising and understanding more information in a more speedy fashion. I am here to guide you and show you how to build sustainable and enjoyable study habits. In an era of information overload and bountiful resources, learning is dynamic and ever changing; thus, I will help you sift through the most salient resources and choose the most important pieces of information. The virtue of learning how to learn is paramount to anything in life!

Discuss the role of the cell membrane in cellular function.

The cell membrane, or phospholipid bilayer, encompasses the contents of a cell and allows for organelles to be contained within the cytoplasm. The cell membrane is semi-permeable, thus is allows the movement of certain molecules and ions in and out of the cell by means of simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion (through integral proteins), osmosis for maintaining an isotonic water pressure, or active transport through pump proteins. The phospholipid bilayer is comprised of hydrophilic phosphate heads and hydrophobic fatty acid tails. Integrated within the bilayer, cholesterol is a key molecule that allows the membrane to maintain its fluidity and rigidity.
