About me

I’m in my second year of studying mathematics, operational research, statistics and economics at the University of Southampton. I love this course because it’s more applied than pure mathematics, which I find more interesting, and easier to learn. Being able to know why you’re doing something and how that works in real applications can really cement something in your memory, rather than just trying to learn by rote.

Taking exams can be very stressful, having gone through GCSEs, A Levels, and my first set of university exams, I certainly understand. I think a big part of exam taking is just having confidence in yourself, and not overthinking what you do.

Applying to university was definitely exciting, but quite scary. I’m happy to talk to students about the process. When I applied, I wasn’t even sure exactly what course I wanted to do, and applied for 3 different ones!

Now at uni, I am finally feeling like I’m settled in. It’s a big jump when you’ve lived in small town and known the same people for 10 years. But I’ve continued training in taekwondo (and fast approaching my black belt), going to maths socials, and I’ve joined a few societies, including feminist society, and women in business.

About my sessions

As a tutor, I want to improve students self confidence. I’ve found this to be the biggest problem for students. Often they know what they need to do, but are too worried they’ve got it wrong to attempt the question.

I will leave the lesson topics up to the students. We can either follow along with their curriculum to cement their understanding, or they can provide a list of everything they don’t understand so far, and I’ll make sure I have material to work on with them.

I tried too hard to stick to the same revision techniques as everyone else at school. Everyone seemed to love flashcards. I found them frustrating and too small, but persisted for most of GCSE and the start of A Level, before it really dawned on me that I could just use A4 paper. It wasn’t as small, neat, or pretty, but it worked a lot better for me.

I also tried to make notes for maths. This worked for parts of the curriculum, but ultimately I achieved far more just practising questions.

What I’m trying to say is that I’ll work with students to find a revision and work style that works for them. Finding a way to make everything stick in your memory is far more important than the colour of your highlighters
