About me

I have loved English since I was a little girl.  I have always been fascinated by the way in which texts open up windows onto other time periods and cultures, and I enjoy tracing how writers have crafted their texts to achieve this and imitating it in my own creative writing.  My passion for this subject has led me to study the subject to postgraduate level at university, and then to train as an English teacher in order to pass on my love of the discipline to others.  My interest in English has always been bound up with my love of History; I feel situating a text within its context allows readers to fully appreciate the writer's purpose.

I have been a secondary school English teacher for 2 years and have tutored with MyTutor for 5 years, giving me a wealth of experience helping students improve whilst stimulating their interest in their studies.  My track record of helping students of a range of abilities to achieve their desired results (and higher) is attested in my reviews.  Finally, my personal experience in the Oxbridge application system enables me to guide students through the complex procedure themselves, and helps me to support students to produce engaging personal statements for any university application.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.  I look forward to working with you!

About my sessions

I plan tutorials to meet our pre-arranged objectives, targeting the areas my students have identified as weaknesses. I then take care to tailor the material for our tutorials to exam specifications, if relevant. I often write model answers for sample questions to share with students, showing them the kind of thing examiners are looking for. This planning means that our sessions together are efficient, so that students feel confident their needs are being met.

Tutorials themselves include a range of different activities, making the most of the online platform.  I upload students' work and use the annotation tool to mark work live, highlighting exactly what they have done well and what they have missed out. I share images, music and video clips to allow students to explore ideas in alternative media, together with links to other websites to promote independent research. We spend a lot of time talking through ideas to ensure students feel confident with topics before writing anything down.

Finally, and most importantly, I believe a comfortable learning environment is the key to academic success. I strive to create this by getting to know my students, finding out about their interests, which helps me tailor tutorials to link topics with their own passions. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know a range of students over the years, and I hope I will continue to do so in the future.

Laura is a fantastic tutor. After her amazing help with my A-Level in English literature, she helped me push my grade up from a B in AS to an A* in A2. Laura's teaching methods are effective, engaging and informative. Through her dedication to helping me improve in English, I was able to achieve and exceed my goal.

I always enjoy Laura's lessons! Every week we go through areas which I struggle with or lack confidence in, and I leave the lessons feeling much more confident and happy! I honestly believe this exam prep will help me succeed with my English A2 exam.
