About me

I’m studying History at Lancaster Uni, having done a minor in Maths in my first year. This unlikely combination balanced essay writing nicely with problem solving. History satisfies my curiosity; I want to know how and why things happened, and particularly like exploring the effects on ordinary people. Maths provided a logical approach, a clear answer to questions where history is so subjective!

History satisfies my curiosity; I want to know how and why things happened, and particularly like exploring the effects on ordinary people. Maths provided a logical approach, a clear answer to questions where history is so subjective!

Aside from studying, most of my time at uni is spent with the music society. Having played in ensembles for years and loved music at A-level it was really important that the universities I applied to had a busy and thriving music scene. Lancaster didn’t disappoint, and I can’t stress enough the importance of extracurricular time to let off some steam and enjoy yourself.

School exams have been a mixed bag for me – while at GCSE I was fairly sure I would get high grades, A-levels were far more stressful. I applied to Cambridge amid pressure from teachers to attend a prestigious university and was rejected after the interview process. Ultimately I’m much happier at a university I chose for myself, but I have lots of experience in the Oxbridge process.

About my sessions

My lessons will vary student to student, tailored to what each individual needs and finds effective. Initially I will establish what the pupil is looking to get out of tutoring and explore their current level of understanding with baseline questions. From there we will break it down into chapters or topics, with engaging teaching and assessment. My lessons will vary student to student, tailored to what each individual needs and finds effective. Initially I will establish what the pupil is looking to get out of tutoring and explore their current level of understanding with baseline questions. From there we will break it down into chapters or topics, with engaging teaching and assessment. In each lesson I would like to give students the opportunity to ask questions about any school homework they are struggling with, and talk through similar problems that will allow them to complete the work on their own.

Practice and feedback are some of the most effective ways to prepare for exams. I will make sure to give detailed breakdowns of my feedback to a student, talking them through the positive aspects of their work, and guiding them in the areas that were weaker. I will make the most of assessment resources such as past papers to monitor the progress of pupils, and keep a learning log of what was achieved in each lesson.
