About me

Hello! I am currently in my 4th year of an integrated masters in Biological Sciences and have just returned from a year abroad in Perth, Australia. My principle area of interest is ecology, and find ecosystems and the interactions within them fascinating. This interest has led to all sorts of adventures, including measuring trees in the rainforest, working with pollinators of endangered flowers in the Australian bush and setting up camera traps to find hedgehogs in London parks.

Ecology is great because it encompasses all fields of chemistry and biology, from genetics and organic chemistry, to animal behaviour and human biology. This means I have a broad range of knowledge from micro to macro and can therefore put all elements of the exam syllabus into the context of the wider world.

I find that by making the subject more interesting my students do much better, because suddenly studying doesn't feel so much like hard work. As well as looking at applications of the topics in the syllabus in the wider world, I am a strong believer in practicing exam technique from the beginning. In this way the key exam technique is learnt in a stimulating and engaging fashion.

About my sessions

The first session with me is all about establishing goals, and how to reach them. We will talk about what grade you would like to achieve, and where you are currently at. It is important to find any topics that you are struggling with, so we can make sure they are no longer a problem. Confidence is a big determining factor in grades, and dealing with problem areas is a great confidence boost. Once we have established goals, plus ideal learning style, we can begin!

Covering a topic begins with reading what the syllabus wants from you. I then find relevant articles, and we read and discuss those. I then like to go through the text book and talk about everything covered in the topic, and depending on learning styles we do different activities. This can be anything from getting you to teach me the subject or getting you to draw a diagram. Once the material has been covered and the level of understanding is good, we will move on to exam questions.

We will measure progress by keeping track of scores in the exam questions. It is important to keep going back over the topics once we have covered them, and I do this by giving questions to be done outside of our tutoring sessions. We will then go over them after wards and iron out any problems.

To sum up, my tutoring style is about setting a goal and how to achieve it, through putting the syllabus into the context of the wider world and concentrating on exam technique from the beginning.
