About me

My name is Emma Farrell and I'm a third year student studying BA French and German at University College London (UCL). I love my degree programme because, honestly, I feel like Tom Hanks in The Da Vinci Code every time I translate a newspaper article, or understand some medieval German text, or manage to discuss ethical issues about African artefacts in the British Museum in French.

I've always enjoyed school. At secondary school, it was all about memorising information, patterns and diagrams for GCSE. I used to paper my bedroom walls with colourful posters and make up songs or anagrams to help me remember all the details - it might seem impossible, but it can be done! At sixth-form college, I had enough cue cards to fill up half my backpack, and used to use apps like Quizlet to get revision done on the bus. Now that I'm at university, life has actually calmed down a bit. Now, I've had time to do some volunteering, start taekwondo classes and, in first year, I even signed up to a summer school about Global Citizenship, which has given me some major brownie points in the eyes of UCL.

I am passionate about education, and I want to make sure you reach your maximal potential. I really do believe that anybody can achieve the grade they want, it's just about finding the right technique and really putting your heart and soul into smashing your exams. The feeling you get after will be worth it, I promise.

About my sessions

Vis-à-vis my tutoring style, I like to focus on example-lead learning. If I give you a question or a task, I'm going to do it too and together, we'll come up with the best solution. I've tutored people in French, German and English in the past, and I'm now teaching English as a foreign language in Germany, so I can adapt to whatever suits you best. I will try to make lessons as fun as possible, as I believe that's how we get the best results.

Personally, I learn best through memorable techniques; at A-Level, I was much more likely to remember a case-study for Geography if my teacher had shown me an interesting video clip, or asked me to make a pop-up poster. After that, it was just repetition until I could recite all the stages of beach erosion in my sleep. I also learned very effectively from examples, as I used to struggle with structuring my answers. I find templates for longer exam questions incredibly helpful.

In my sessions, I like to use quizzes, gap-fill exercises and media. I shall ensure that all material is relevant to the topics you have to study in class, so that the benefits of our lessons transfer directly into the classroom. If help is needed with homework, I can work specifically on that, too. I will measure progress through quizzes.

Emma has really helped my daughter and has helped her to use extensive and complex vocabulary. She is always understanding of the subjects that are difficult and is extremely encouraging. She has also made a great impact on my daughter's grade in German.
