About me

Hello, my name is Abby and I am currently studying BA English at the University of Birmingham. I am passionate about teaching English and have had many tutoring roles in the past including at Explore Learning, as a voluntary tutor at GCSE and at a local primary school.  Hello, my name is Abby and I am currently studying BA English at the University of Birmingham. I am passionate about teaching English and have had many tutoring roles in the past including at Explore Learning, as a voluntary tutor at GCSE and at a local primary school. These positions have equipped me with a flexible and dynamic teaching style. I believe that with proper guidance and hard work any student is capable of achieving the top grades.

I recently completed my A Levels and achieved 3 A* in English Literature, English Language and an Extended Project Qualification in which I focused on comparing Greek and Shakespearean tragedy. Prior to this, I had also achieved A*s in English literature and language at GCSE. As a result, I have a clear understanding of marking criteria for A Level and GCSE English as well as how these subjective requirements are applied.

Not only do I aim to help my students achieve the top grades, but I am also eager to inspire a passion for the discipline too. Once students are able to acquire close reading skills they may gain an appreciation for a diverse range of literature from poetry to scripts. Additionally, Written communication and analytical skills complement the study of many other subjects making a strong grade in English an essential for the higher level study.

I will structure my lessons in close collaboration with my students in order to provide the most effective teaching possible. This would involve using resources such as mark schemes, past papers and examiners reports from the students chosen exam board. This would then inform the structure of my lessons.

Firstly, I would ascertain the students understanding of essay writing and help to enhance this using method such as PEEL, PETER and quote comment style paragraphing. Following this I would introduce an exam question and ask the student how they would tackle this, we would then refine this idea and begin to produce an outline. This would be preceded by a timed independent task in which the student would produce an analytical paragraph. We would then review this together using a mark scheme provided by the exam board. This may be supplemented by model answers to illustrate skills such as integrating quotes and contexts, utilising literary terms and creating a cyclical structure to fully respond to the question.

We would then conclude the lesson by setting targets for the next session these may include practising certain skills, reading background material, revising for a quiz and completing practice papers. However, given the diversity of the English prescribed by the national curriculum my session will be very flexible and adaptable towards the student's needs and exam board.
