About me

I have been a Mathematics and Biology tutor for nearly three years, tutoring students ranging from ages ten through to eighteen. I have worked as both a voluntary tutor at a local deprived school alongside working as a paid tutor. In my perspective, tutoring is not all about enhancing your subject knowledge, it's more about building confidence and self-esteem as this is usually the barrier acting between students and their academic success. As a tutor, I have learnt that not all methods of teaching work for all students. This is why my tutoring is personal and adapted to the students requirements. My methods of teaching are both unique and innovative to ensure that all students achieve their goals and perform to the best of their ability.

Being tutored myself throughout my teen years, has allowed me to see a first-hand impact that tutoring makes on students. I would like to pass my personal experience and understanding onto other students as I believe that this is a reward that no other career can bring. Mathematics particularly is such a crucial discipline in society, helping us think analytically about problems and this is what employers and higher institutions seek. Thus, helping students improve their mathematical ability, will have a future impact on them significantly and knowing this motivates me to help students wherever possible.

About my sessions

My tutoring experience has highlighted the importance of lesson planning and how different resources work better for different students. My tutoring experience has highlighted the importance of lesson planning and how different resources work better for different students. The first session is where I would really get a flavour of what stage the students are at by giving them a series of short questions, ranging in topics and difficulty in order to tailor future lessons to the best of my ability. I will teach students is that making mistakes is acceptable and they shouldn’t feel embarrassed because of this. The crucial aspect if ensuring that students understand their mistakes and how to avoid these in future. Moreover, although having a sound grasp of the content is crucial to academic success, how to apply this knowledge is also critical. This is why I always ensure that I complete numerous past paper questions with the students as it puts they theory they have learnt into practise. Additionally, whatever subject I am tutoring, I always provide homework sheets at the end of the session. These homework sheets really ensure that tutees are getting the maximum benefit from tutoring and it helps to embed the knowledge that they have learnt. Furthermore, it is a good teaching aid for myself as I can understand what aspects of the course that maybe the students are finding most challenging. In terms of academic progress, this is all kept in an interactive log which can be shared with parents at any stage during the tutoring process.

We are very happy with Niall's style of tutoring. He's a very patient and sympathetic teacher, and always puts in the extra effort to ensure everything he teaches is well understood. In addition to class room exercises, he gives homework to help consolidate what's been taught in the classroom. He also gives very good back on how each session went. Our son has now started looking forward to Maths lessons. Thanks Niall!
